[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:04 am

Thanks for the picture, Bob ! This just seems like the easiest
way to run the lines for convenience of installation/maintenance,
and to avoid the low spot at the back. Maybe this'll become the
new 'standard' Rebel installation ! ;-) :-)

I knew this setup would work for the Rebel, but I'm not sure about
Mike's Elite - the Elite has a wider door, and it's a bit different
at the back .... Sure hope it will work for him !

Maybe he could try it with clear plastic tubing taped in place,
& water to see the flow ....

Let us know how it went, please, Mike !

from the shut off to the gascolator with no need for a drain sump. The flow
is all down hill to the gascolator even in the sitting position. My fuel
flow tests resulted in 36 GPH on a single line and 54 GPH running both and
that was with only 20 litres of fuel in each tank. The only down side to
this installation is the fuel lines are exposed, however I did not find it
being a problem as you are actually climbing over this point on entry and
exit. Also makes easy inspection. Best regards Bob J

Our Elite has the 8:00 tires and the Moose tailwheel. Fuel line not yet
run but it will go to rear and down behind the door, then forward just
below door sill to front. We looked at avoiding a low point sump at the
rear of the door and could not see how it can be done without a sump. We
will put a sump in every low point. May not be necessary but I will not
take the chance. We get too much condensation here in South Carolina. An
additional concern is the oncoming possibility of alchohol in the mogas
and
the potential water problems that brings.

Got my plane on it's wheels and the door sill slopes back about 1" in it's
length, so definately need a drain behind the door opening. Oh well I will
make it work.

[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:04 am

Hi Mike !

Is that slope over and above a line from the top rear to the
bottom front of the sill ?? Note that the fuel line does not run
parallel to the sill, but slopes down at the front ....

Another thought - if necessary, you could always add the
triangular section from the Rebel back into the rear of the
door frame, filling in a triangle at the rear of the door ...
Builders have filled in triangles at the front to allow
strut clearance for swing-up doors, so why not a bit at the
back to simplify fuel line routing ???? :-)

If I take a line even across the bottom of the sill I will hit the fire wall at the bottom, so my gascolator would have to be mounted under the cowl or firewall if I want it to be the low point.

[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Not necessarily. Typically, the cowl extends past the bottom of the
firewall to provide an exit for the air in the cowl. There would probably
be enough room for the gascolator to still be above the bottom of the cowl.

[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Post by mbetti » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:04 am

What I meant here is, if I want the gascolator to be the low point from the tank, it would entirely have to hang below the bottom of the firewall. Or the fuel line would have to stay above the door sill somehow.

G'day

FWIW when I was building my Rebel I forgot about running the fuel lines
until it was too late in the construction to put them under the floor.

What I eventually did was run to run the line down the rear of the door
post, along the sill and then to the gascolator. I then mounted the
gascolator so the bottom of it just sat on the cowl sill.

I have never had any problem with fuel flow or the entrapment of water in
the low point of the pipes. Just occasionally I will take the hoses from
the
gascolator, lift the rear or the Rebel high in the air just to purge the
lines in case some water is trapped. I have never found any water anywhere
in the system.

Regards

Ian Donaldson

[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Post by Ian Donaldson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:04 am

Just occasionally I will take the hoses from the
gascolator, lift the rear or the Rebel high in the air just to purge the
lines in case some water is trapped. I have never found any water anywhere
in the system.

Regards

Ian Donaldson

: Not necessarily. Typically, the cowl extends past the bottom of the
: firewall to provide an exit for the air in the cowl. There would probably
: be enough room for the gascolator to still be above the bottom of the
cowl.

[rebel-builders] Rebel/Elite - fuel lines

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:04 am

I thought from reading the archives you didn't want the gascolator to be the
lowest point, so air could escape there?
