Same here. Got mine from a wrecker out of an old Chevy Sprint. No problems
for 450+ hours. I think it cost me about 30 bucks.

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Mike
Excellant as an external regulator allows complete control of the
alternator and the simple additon of overvoltage protection. That is the
preferred way to do it IMO. Many guys use a automotive regulator.
Standard part VR166 for example at about $40. is shown in aeroelectric
Z-23 diagram. I'd personally favour a solid state one since they have
some built in temperature compensation.
Chrylser also used to use a cheap solid state unit through the 1970's.
The VR166 or equivalent is popular however. B&C sell the overvoltage
protector for about $35. which I'd recommend
Ken .

[rebel-builders] voltage regulators

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Mike
Sure the B&C unit is very good and will outlast your airplane.
However the VR166 regulator from your local auto parts store will do the
job a lot cheaper if you don't mind a bit less reliability. Personally
since you already have the crowbar overvoltage protector I'd probably
use the VR166 as they are cheap enough that you could keep a spare in
stock if you wanted.

[rebel-builders] voltage regulators

Post by Angus McKenzie » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Hi Guy
Homemade mounting brackets for both the starter and alternator
(Nippondenso/Honda).
The Toyota truck starter is in a one-piece milled solid bracket, I'll look
for pictures.
The alternator mount is made from welded 1" flat-bar with the Delco/Citabria
pulley installed.
And, I'm using a Ford voltage regulator on the fire-wall..........Angus

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

That sounds pretty light. Not much past finger tight. Do you mean foot
pounds?

Same here. Got mine from a wrecker out of an old Chevy Sprint. No
problems
for 450+ hours. I think it cost me about 30 bucks.

I'm using a nipondenso alternator with a built in regulator works great.

Wayne G. O'Shea

[rebel-builders] voltage regulators

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:07 am

On my personal Rebel I hunted down the socket from a junk car and obtained a
new Regulator for a Honda Civic. Much better control than the Chrysler style
ON/OFF style generally used. Also has output for the alternator fail idiot
light and very good voltage control. My Gill 25 battery lasted from when
obtained '94..installed and first flown June '95 and I removed it last year
when I moved the battery to the back of the tailcone. I then installed the
removed battery in my f-in-laws 701 and it lasted another year before it
wouldn't turn his 912S this spring....so 11+ seasons...generally unheard of
with aircraft batteries...so the regulator must be doing a good job. Takes a
bit of work and a Honda Civic wiring diagram to wire up though and 10 years
later I'm not sure where the wiring diagram is.
