[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

I was thinking something along these lines. THen also some accent on the
wings and tail, but mostly bare metal.

If you want it that shiny plan on 200-500 hrs of buffing to get rid of the
grain that shows in the 6061 that murphy uses. To keep it that shiny takes
about 40-50 hrs a year if it's in a hangar. ( my planes polished and I've
got the biceps to prove it but it's never had that perfect all over glow )
I'll put up a picture of it with it's new engine soon.
If you plan on having a polished plane I think it would save a ton of
time and make a much nicer and easier job if you polished each piece
individually on the bench before rivetting. It's really hard to polish
around the rivets but the rivets themselves shine up really easily.

Wow! Thanks for the info. Well, my biceps could use a little work for sure.
My aircraft is about 80% complete, so the pieces are all together. Are you
buffing the grain by hand, or using a powered buffer?

I really like the shiny look.

Power buffer is the only way to go. I burned up a couple cheapies from
canadian tire before I bought a good milwaukee sander/polisher. 3M medium
grit rubbing compound to start then polish after that. If you cant do the
peices then at least make sure to do the wings off the plane. being able to
turn them over saves a lot of work just make up a couple wood airfoil
shaped cradles padded with carpet to do the bottoms. google to find lots of
polishing hints. here's one site to get ya started
