[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Hi Rich

I was told that it is very tough to properly clean primer after dirt and
oil etc was on it. It is not a smooth easy to clean surface like the
topcoat.

There is absolutely no evidence of snap crackle pop or any movement on
119R and I'm very glad that I don't have to take it apart again to paint
it. OTOH if it meant flying a year earlier I might consider it.

Rich Dodson wrote:

And then...

A local pilot who used to deliver Cessnas from Wichita told me that the Cessna test pilots would take the planes up and hear the "snap, crackle, pop" of things (like fasteners and rivets) settling in during the test flight.

So I thought I would get the opinions from those who have been there. Is it better to leave the Rebel primed but not yet topcoated during its flight test period?

Thanks!

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Post by Robert and Olga Johnson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Hi Rich. When I built Rebel 652, I finished it complete, including interior
and paint, before I took it to the airport as the "boys " told me I would be
having to much fun to want to take the time to paint later. They where
right. I did not experience any "snap crackle or pop" during all my flying
and never saw any evidence of cracked paint around any rivets. When
assembled properly the Rebel is one solid machine. Also if you are planning
to paint it yourself, it is much easier to do all the various components
separately before final assembly. The week I painted, my yard looked like a
"laundry facility" with parts hanging all around the back yard. ( I painted
in the garage) - Have fun, your going to love it. Bob J (Now Rebel 192)

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

I'd be more concerned about things that need to be changed before painting. The
Rebel may be a more proven deasign than my Elite, but I was sure glad I flew it
before painting. I had to enlarge the cowl inlets, alter the rudder and
elevator spades etc. and would have been pissed off if they were already
painted.

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Lately I've been thinking more in terms of not painting -- just go with
everbrite and a "speed stripe". Down the road a bit I may feel the urge to
paint, and especially if I get to the point of adding floats. (If I add
floats, I will definitely do salt water.)

What down sides to leaving it bare + something protective such as everbrite
am I not thinking of?

hi ben

i have used everbrite all over inside of my rebel,

was thinking of leaving bare or polish then everbrite,

only problem i see is if you want to paint i don't know if you can leave
everbrite on or must get it off, i have tried some small parts with
everbrite and then painted over and got mixed results, needs to be tested
fully, also oil spray from engine under belly will remove everbrite i
suspect, another problem would be how to clean old everbrite surface to prep
for paint and then what type of paint to use ??

I'm planning to paint a stripe, paint the fabric flaperons (maybe just
silver dope), and paint the fiberglass parts, otherwise just bare metal. I
think metal looks cool.

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Post by bransom » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

I saw Steve Sloan's Rebel at Arlington. Bare AL and it looks terrific --
no stains, just a great looking airplane. Dick's new Continental IO360 was
there too, also bare, also beautiful. Steve said he waxes his once a year.
Walter was there with his bare float Rebel (the rebel is painted), and the
floats showed stains (saltwater) --- which to me just says, yeah, I use
this thing!

Pictures of above (minus Walter's, plus Bruce's) at

I was thinking wax might be harder to eliminate than everbrite when/if one
were going to paint later.

Thanks for the pics Ben,
Dicks looks great for sure! I really like the triangular rear window as
opposed to the standard one. It makes it look really cute. He probably
wouldn't like me calling it "cute" with that super macho engine though.

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Hey, Ben great to meet up with you at Arlington. Just got back today from my
trip to Wayne's place at Temagami. What a prime spot he has there for a
cottage and his floatplane, and we caught a few fish, too. It was a great
trip and the Rebel performed flawlessly. Since Arlington, have put on over
5000 miles in just over 2 weeks. Now my plane is also plastered with bugs on
all the leading edges, which will take some scrubbing. Had to fly down at
1700 AGL for part of one leg in Saskatchewan, and could barely see out the
window by the time I got to my next fuel stop. Not sure what they were, but
what a mess. Yup, it's really looking like a well used airplane right now.

I'm planning to paint a stripe, paint the fabric flaperons (maybe just
silver dope), and paint the fiberglass parts, otherwise just bare metal.
I
think metal looks cool.

hi ben

i have used everbrite all over inside of my rebel,

was thinking of leaving bare or polish then everbrite,

only problem i see is if you want to paint i don't know if you can
leave
everbrite on or must get it off, i have tried some small parts with
everbrite and then painted over and got mixed results, needs to be
tested
fully, also oil spray from engine under belly will remove everbrite i
suspect, another problem would be how to clean old everbrite surface to
prep
for paint and then what type of paint to use ??

Lately I've been thinking more in terms of not painting -- just go with
everbrite and a "speed stripe". Down the road a bit I may feel the
urge
to
paint, and especially if I get to the point of adding floats. (If I
add
floats, I will definitely do salt water.)

What down sides to leaving it bare + something protective such as
everbrite
am I not thinking of?

[rebel-builders] Painting before Test Flying?

Post by Bruce Georgen » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:00 am

Nice pictures Ben. Thanks for posting them. Sorry we didn't give you a ride at Arlington. I know you would have liked that. It all goes by so fast and I have lots of old Kitfox pals that expect me to camp with them every year. There a fun bunch of people. Even a trip over to the splash-in would have been fun. Just get your plane flying by next year and you won't need a ride... :-)

Bruce

the time I got to my next fuel stop. Not sure what they were, but
what a mess. Yup, it's really looking like a well used airplane right now.

I think keeping a coat of wax on should prevent that.

I was thinking of the same thing myself. I saw a Zenith 601XL at Oshkosh
that was basically bare with some accent paint and it looked pretty nice. Is
there a clear coat that people put on the bare aluminum? Is that what
Everbrite is? This aircraft is not flying off of water to start with.

Jim!
