[rebel-builders] oil filters and adaptors
[rebel-builders] oil filters and adaptors
Hi All,
My .02 on the oil filter and adaptors.
I purchased mine thru Ken Miller a well respected Long ez guru who also
supplies a number of after market parts for engines and airframe that are well
below normal costs. He's sorta the Wayne O'Shea of the canard bunch. His oil
filter adaptor is 180.00 US and is the same as the B+C. I know the engineer
that did the work and was upset with B+C when he found out what they were
charging for the unit so he passed his drawings on to Mr Miller. His site is
Longez.com. I have no financal connections with Ken.
As for the filter, I use a Wix filter that has the design for NOT letting
the oil drain out of the filter while setting. You do not want to wait for
the oil filter to fill every time you start, so be careful on you filter
choice. That's the big difference between the Ch 48108 and Ch 48109 Champion
filters.
The short comings of the WIX filter is there is no spot for safety wire.
It does has as good or better filtering. Research by others before me.
If anyone is interested I'll get the filter numbers.

Ensure the system, what ever u install has an oil pressure relief valve
within. I'm using the angle system from the EZ site and did my first change
yesterday. Ran up the engine, later punched a hole in the top and waited a
while. Not much oil left in the filter when I took it off.

If anyone is interested , I have the plate that screws on where the filter
goes on the engine (that the hose ends screw into)and the firewall mount for
the filter assembly,, you would need hoses for your application.. The hoses
that are with it are to heavy, but included... Could take to Oshkosh if
someone is interested in assembly.. Email me off list. Dale SR-033

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. Was punching a hole in the top of the filter your
method to avoid a mess? Sounds like a good idea if it works well. I take
it the Long-ez unit has the oil pressure relief valve in it. What does
that do and how? What filter did you use with it?

Curt,
Thanks for the reply. I would appreciate the filter numbers -WIX. You
made a comment on a big difference between Champion 48108 and 48109
filters. What difference did you discover and how? How do you drain the
WIX and would a clamp around the filter hold and make safety wire
feasible?

Dale, Ken and Mike,
Thanks all for the replies. I think I'm moving toward a solution here.
I'm inclined to stay with the filter mounted on the back of the engine
on the basis of less guts, less bellyaches. It is expensive for such a
simple element though.

The relief or by-pass shud be in the filter not the unit or mount. In case
ur engine began making enough deposits to plug the filter, the engine would
still supply enough oil to run. Most of the oil went back in the base and I
probably would of had less if I waited a while longer. Used a Champion-
can't remember the part no. Wasn't aware that some filters prevent flow
back when they are shut down.

Thanks Steve. The Champions have that flowback valve and are the ones
the long-ez guys sell as well. The only differences in the two seems to
be the length which I will have to figure out soon. Cheers
