Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:56 am

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has used a Subaru engine
in their Rebel. Model, performance, redrive, and would you do it again.
Thanks Bob Johnson. Rebel 652,725, Moose 226, and now Rebel 192/731
Hi Bob I haven't used a subaru in a plane although I thought about it long
and hard. I decided not to use one because it seems to take an awful long
time to install and if for some reason I ever had to part out my plane a
used lycoming is still worth some money while a used subaru conversion
seems to be really hard to sell. I have a 2003 subaru imprezza with the 2.5
litre 165hp engine it's a great engine for a car but put it in second gear
and drive down the road at 5000rpm quickly gives you an uneasy feeling
about how long it would last in a plane. Just my opinion.

Hey Drew,
Crest a hill real fast in in second gear and you can then even say you've
flown one.

And hell, if you can do that, why bother with all this riveting? :)

It's actually my wifes car so I'll have to wait till she's not around but
it sounds like fun. Do you think I'll be able to get it out of ground
effect and be able to use it again? :)

Hey, Drew, my wifie has a 2006 Imprezza, too. This is the 3rd Subaru we've
owned, and definitely like the car, but will stick with Lycoming for the
plane.

With the new cheap Lycoming clones now, it makes the auto conversion
decision harder to justify.

Regarding the vibration with the Lyc, well, just makes it feel like it has
more power than it does.

Jeez Walter you must be pretty flush if you can call a lycoming clone
cheap. I just hung an ECI titan engine from aerosport power on the front of
my plane and it didn't seem cheap to me. Engines hung working on all the
other stuff need new baffles lower cowl changes and an ignition system to
get flying again. Oh and the float reinstall. Still hope to fly up to
Waynes to see you guys but may arrive by canoe instead.

By cheap, I meant compared to an auto conversion. I don't think you could
get an 0360 equivalent powered Soob auto conversion for 20K.

As for flush, I wish. If it is not my wife and her spendy habits extending
my retirement date, then it's my son who just had to buy his first home (a
townhouse) right at the peak of the housing market here in Vancouver. I just
have to keep repeating to myself, I love my job, I love my job, I love...

Yeah, in a month, should be there. Hope my plane holds together. I just had
to shorten a brake line end, as it rubbed through a grommet and sprang a
leak on me, just as I was taxiing to get on the runway for take-off. It was
a little embarrassing to have to tell the controller, I need to shut down my
engine, get out, and straighten it out by hand, so I could taxi back to my
hangar. That follows my O-ring replacement in the amphib cylinder a short
while ago. Wonder what is next. I had intended to take my floats off this
past winter and do a thorough maintenance going over which would have caught
these problems. Now, I am hoping to make it through the summer, as I can't
afford any further down time. Only thing left to do is regap my plugs, as
they are a little wide now, with 400 hours.

I've brake problems too. One of my calipers has a leak and all the fluid is
out on the ground. I'm going to put the floats on before I fly though so
I'll have lots of time to fix it before next fall. For an 0-360 equivalent
I wonder why eggenfeller chose the 6 cylinder instead of a WRX engine with
the turbo.

I think Crossflow is using the 2 litre WRX. I don't know anyone using the
new wrx engines though. The new impreza wrx are 300HP! stock. I think
that is what I am going to swap my EJ22 for:). As for weight hard to
compare one guy that had a EJ25 and swapped back to a IO360 says it
25lbs lighter but no muffler or constant speed prop so it hard to compare
apples and oranges. As for WWII technologies the company that made the
engines for the zero went on to become Subaru.
