Probably about 50/50 - many builders make arrangements with
auto body paint shops, using Dupont or similar automotive paint
- works well, looks good, and relatively inexpensive. Usually,
YOU do all the prep work, etching & masking ... and delivery.
Risk of dents enroute..
Others go to aircraft paint shops - usually pricey, but comes
with some kind of guarantee. No work for you, and the benefit of
their experience. Usually less expensive than for certified a/c,
and they don't have to strip yours first ...
Least expensive (?????!!!) is buying the HVLP spray gear and
fresh air hood, setting up your own area, and possibly painting your
neighbour's fence and dog with the overspray ... ;-)
I'm sure there's expert advice here, whichever way you decide to
go !
FWIW, I once owned a Piper J-4 that was painted with Canadian
Tire (auto parts store) Exterior Latex house paint and a roller,
about a year before we bought it - lasted over 10 years, with a
bit of fading in the green trim, until a recover was needed !! :-)
Lots of things will work !
