[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:47 am

Hi Mike !

The rubber U channel on the bottom of the windshield is a good idea -
not only stops wear on the aluminum, but mainly cushions the plexiglass
from shocks that could crack it ! Also eases movement from expansion.

I like the Bostick 1100 sealant that the windshield manufacturers
recommend - comes in different colours, at most hardware stores, in
a caulking gun cartridge. It's good for skylights & side windows too !

One builder made an aluminum bottom retainer for the windshield -
looks sharp. Cut up pieces of bristol board to get fit, taping them
together. When complete, traced onto fresh bristol board - and had
a pattern for aluminum. Took some rolling & bending, but it does
look great..... Of course, NO screws through the Plexi - it just
floats in the frame, on the sealant, as size can change well over 1/4"
in summer !

Bob,

This aluminum bottom retainer concept is what's on the Stinson 108-3 ... it
is a neat way to go. I'm considering making one for 612e. Windshild just
drops into this bottom piece with aluminum strips up the sides and along the
top.

Do you just push the tape sealant into the edge of the windshield or try to
get it under?

The sealing compound is butyl tape. Available from any windsheild or
auto supply shop. I used it on FOKM to restore the windshield in it.
There is no rubber strip in FOKM but she's pretty old - 1992. The butyl
is a treat to use. Windshield went in in a few minutes, no problem, the
first time. That's a bit of a first for me : ).

Dear Mike,

I used the aluminum retainer strip on the sides and top and just
glassed
the
bottom. It seems to have worked out great, and I don't think that the
windshield will be going anywhere!

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

I used large head rivets on the lower fiberglass piece and #6 stainless
truss head bolts with thin nyloc nuts everywhere else. On the roof I put
thin rubber washers under the bolt heads to hopefully keep out water
same as I did on the skylight bolts. I also used nylon washers under
everything non structural that was already painted (except where the
rubber washers were). On the door windows I used aluminum mandrel pop
rivets that do not squeeze near as hard as avex rivets.

Mike...MAM calls out rivets everywhere...tips/inspection covers/you name
it...they're cheap and proper hardware is not.

Bolt those on with AN526-832 machine screws and nuts. Just snugged enough to
take the weather stripping foam against the windshield.

[rebel-builders] Windshield

I'm pretty sure this has been laid out many times...but here goes again.

There retainer strip works best with the wide brake edge used as the bolting
side and the narrow braked edge as the windshield side.

When drilling the side strips you drill into the strip (5 per side is
plenty - top strip about every 3 to 4 inches) and every so slightly angle
the holes towards the nose as you are going thru the Fus-9 (assume it's this
number on the Elite as well - The triangle between the door post and
windshield). Doing this (angled holes) will help pull the strip down tight
against the windshield without making the AN526 head sitting cocked against
the strip. On final assembly take some 1/4" to 3/8" wide x 3/16 thick open
cell weather stripping or what ever you can get and stick it to the inside
face of the retainer strips along the small brake edge section. That way
when the strip is tightened down the foam will compress and hold the
windshield prior to the strips edge making contact with the Acrylic.

The top strip generally gets bolted right thru the cabin roof bulkhead
flange or just behind it. Works well that the windshield stops right in
front of the rivet row on the roof. The retainer will hold the windshield
and is just large enough that the holes end up just behind or on the flange.
If on you have to space them between existing rivets and the trailing edge
of the retainer will sit down on the roof just behind the rivet row for a
clean transition.

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Joel Jacobs » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:52 am

This came through at a great time Wayne. I'm getting ready to start my
windshield very soon. Thanks much for reposting. I had not seen this
either. Do you also put the foam weatherstripping on the top piece?
Thanks again..

I'm pretty sure this has been laid out many times...but here goes again.

There retainer strip works best with the wide brake edge used as the
bolting
side and the narrow braked edge as the windshield side.

When drilling the side strips you drill into the strip (5 per side is
plenty - top strip about every 3 to 4 inches) and every so slightly angle
the holes towards the nose as you are going thru the Fus-9 (assume it's
this
number on the Elite as well - The triangle between the door post and
windshield). Doing this (angled holes) will help pull the strip down tight
against the windshield without making the AN526 head sitting cocked
against

The retainer will hold the windshield
and is just large enough that the holes end up just behind or on the
flange.
If on you have to space them between existing rivets and the trailing edge
of the retainer will sit down on the roof just behind the rivet row for a
clean transition.

Hey Wayne,
Weather stripping foam? I take it you are using something to prevent the
metal retainers from rubbing on the glass? Please explain.

Mike...MAM calls out rivets everywhere...tips/inspection covers/you
name
it...they're cheap and proper hardware is not.

Bolt those on with AN526-832 machine screws and nuts. Just snugged
enough
to
take the weather stripping foam against the windshield.

see
some have used screws. I was thinking the rivets would crease the heck
out
of the strap. Is there a better answer here?

Yes..of course Joel.

I also find with the top one to be sure to run a strip of the buytlene (sp)
tape across where the bolt holes are before putting the strip down. Then
when you push the bolts thru they will seal in the holes. Messy to put the
washers/nuts on...but at least the washer will stay in place while you start
the nuts!
