[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:39 am

Depends Mike. Speed cowl mounting interfers more with the lower windshield
retainer than doing a four door cowl..but either way not a real deciding
factor. I like to do the fitting if I can before the engine is on, as it's a
lot easier laying up glass with nothing in the way ahead of the firewall. Do
the windshield install, layup the lower retainer (or the whole retainer if
you're doing the glass all around style that I hate). Be sure there is
enough space for the cowl to sit across the top of the firewall when
trimming the retainer to final shape. Drill and cleo it before peeling it
off the fuselage. Then you can carry on with what ever you want and the
windshield will be easy to final install at any point.

Pretty sure I had the whole install, layup process in the archives....but
can't remember if that was prior to it being lost.

At what point does one cut and fit the windshield? Before or after engine
installation? Before or after Cowl installation?
Thanks,

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Wayne, thanks for the input,
I can't find your process in the Archives, would that be in the file section
with the pictures or in the previous emails?
If I understand correctly, I have a shelf ahead of the firewall that the
windshield sits on, so I am guessing I will have to cut my speed cowl to go
around it??
Also, I won't do anything with fiberglass I don't have to. Is that an ok
option to only glass in the lower retainer and then use aluminum for the
other 3 sides? My instructions call out for glass all the way around, but I
notice in my kit I have some bent stock that looks like it's for the side
strips. I looked at some pictures in the archives of R687 and I see the same
side pieces.
I also noticed that R687 made the tail fairing out of aluminum. Is that a
Rebel thing or can I apply it to my Elite?
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Wayne,
I been looking for your procedure to install windshield, is it in an email
or a picture out there?
Elite builders, have any of you just made the lower retainer of fiberglass
and then metal on the other 3 sides like I been reading here and there? My
Elite instructions are for a fiberglass retainer all the way around.

Roger posted most of the process duplicating exactly how I do it.

Under "Rebel - fuselage". Can't miss it - labeled windshield install

bottom. It seems to have worked out great, and I don't think that the
windshield will be going anywhere!

Jeffery,
Do you have any pics of your installation? The ones in the Rebel section
look good but they don't have that over hanging windshield like the Elite
uses.
Are you done with your Elite or at what point? I have a hard time keeping up

Dear Mike,

I'm on the road until Monday, but I'll be glad to oblige when I get back.
I'm finishing up the cowl, and what remains is wing attachment and
aileron/flap controls (plus lots of little things that need attention).

Best wishes,

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Mike Betti » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:47 am

Elitest,
On the subject of the windshield, I find that it makes contact just in front
of the rivet line at the forward roof bulkhead behind the forward sky lights
and is a nice fit on the sides of the roof, but as you come forward over the
forward sky lights there is a space because the windshield is bowed slightly
in that area. Another way of putting it is the windshield doesn't make
contact with the forward sky lights other than at the very aft edge. I
probably could slide my fingers from the inside up over the top of the
overhead carrythrough just below the windshield near the skylights.
Anyway, does this sound right?

Elitest,
On the subject of the windshield, I find that it makes contact just in
front of the rivet line at the forward roof bulkhead behind the forward sky
lights and is a nice fit on the sides of the roof, but as you come forward
over the forward sky lights there is a space because the windshield is
bowed slightly in that area. Another way of putting it is the windshield
doesn't make contact with the forward sky lights other than at the very aft
edge. I probably could slide my fingers from the inside up over the top of
the overhead carrythrough just below the windshield near the skylights.
Anyway, does this sound right?

Dear Mike,

I used the aluminum retainer strip on the sides and top and just glassed
the
bottom. It seems to have worked out great, and I don't think that the
windshield will be going anywhere!

[rebel-builders] Windshield

Post by Mike Betti » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:47 am

Builders,
The manual calls out a rubber strip to put on the bottom of the windshield
to protect the fuselage. I don't have any such part in my kit. Did others
find something? Is it necessary?
Also, I remember reading in some past posts from Wayne that he uses a
certain sealing material for the windshield, what is it and where can I get
it?
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Wayne,
I been looking for your procedure to install windshield, is it in an
email
or a picture out there?
Elite builders, have any of you just made the lower retainer of
fiberglass
and then metal on the other 3 sides like I been reading here and there?
My
Elite instructions are for a fiberglass retainer all the way around.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

The sealing compound is butyl tape. Available from any windsheild or
auto supply shop. I used it on FOKM to restore the windshield in it.
There is no rubber strip in FOKM but she's pretty old - 1992. The butyl
is a treat to use. Windshield went in in a few minutes, no problem, the
first time. That's a bit of a first for me : ).

FWIW somewhere it says to make sure you have a rubber strip between the
bottom of the windshield and the glareshield panel to reduce wear on the
aluminum as things move around. Some guys said they received a strip of
rubber U channel. I bought a roll of 1/16" x 1" foam tape from LP (the
windshield folks) but just about any rubber or foam tape
weatherstripping would likely be a good idea. The bostick polyurethane
is a popular sealant. I used silicone sealant (I recommend clear) and
some butyl. Butyl tape is easy to remove and allows movement but may
also have a tendancy to extrude out, make a bit of a mess, and
eventually allow plastic chafing directly on the aluminum. Aircraft
Spruce sells it as strip caulking.
