[rebel-builders] Baggage tie downs

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Gary,
Thanks for bringing this up. I have been trying to figure it out for a
while. I would like to hear what others have done. Here are my ideas so far;
Two tie down points on bulkheads A, B, and C. One on each side at the top of
the curved floor. I was thinking of using AN 3/16 eye bolts at these
locations with a diamond shape gusset over the intersection of the bulkheads
and side channels picking up several rivets in each direction.
Also I want to put 2 or 4 flush tie down points of some sort on the flat
part of the forward floor between bulkhead A and the seats. For those I was
thinking of this: http://www.pitposse.com/quditian.html
or maybe one of these pan fittings:
http://www.kinedyne.com/hardware/hardwa ... anFittings
They make a pan fitting with a combination ring/stud. The ring would be used
for cargo straps, and stud accepts a chair leg fitting. I was thinking
removable jumpseat.
I also want to have some kind of net/curtain at bulkhead A so that I can
toss small stuff behind the seats and not have it slide back to the tail.
Anyway, I'm still thinking on it. It does seem to be an under discussed
topic. You have to have a way to stop whatever you put in the airplane from
taking your head off in a crash/sudden stop.

I looked at the past emails and find little discussion as to
what others have done in installing baggage tie downs. My
questions are:

1. What sort of brackets have been used for secure tie down points?

2. Is the best place to install them on the bulkheads aft of the
passenger compartment window?

3. How many bulkheads have tie downs installed - the first two?

Does anyone have pictures of their installations? It would be nice
To have them posted to the website.

I saw one Rebel with what looked like stainless steel boat loops
on the first two bulkheads after the passenger window with the first
set low to the floor, the second set 1/3 the way up the side and
the third set at the top with another in the center. Each bulkhead
had a similar arrangement so that a small load or a larger load
could be carried. They had like a canvas back cover which could be
strung at either location and tied down. Is this what others find
useful?

What are some other suggestions?

[rebel-builders] Baggage tie downs

Post by Gary Gustafson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:38 am

These web sites give me a few additional options as to handle what
I want to do with tiedowns. I too want an easily removable curtain
to act as a containment dam and to close off the rear end of the plane
temporarily. I will have to take a good look at my plane upon my
next visit (44 miles away) and make a judgment as to what I can do. I
will post my solution when I make one.

Thanks for the excellent websites.
