[rebel-builders] Rebel baggage floor thickness

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Just carry on with the piece I cut for you! Remember .025 is 25% more weight
than .020 and keep that in mind throughout the build Won't be a problem once
you have all the channels in and the top hat over the cables etc. If you
find you really need to be in and out numerous times with heavy tools.... a
strip of plywood a few inches wide is all you need to throw in to move
around on. Haven't seen it be an issue for annual inspections, battery
removal, ELT service etc. My back floor still looks like new after 11 years
in the air.

I am working on the floor aft of bulkhead A. I was considering using
thicker
material from A to B, And the same forward of A when I get to that point.
I
was thinking .025 or .032. I don't want to add unnecessary weight, but the
.020 seems like it would dent very easily when you are crawling around on
your knees back there.
Does this seem to be an issue with heavily used airplanes?
Thanks
Jesse

On the Elites, we've been putting a couple of extra fore and aft pieces
of ST31 under the baggage floor to stiffen things up. (We = Sean White
and myself, at least).

Hi Jesse !

Most Rebel builders have also been adding extra ST-31 pieces
under the baggage area, and under the seats. As we learned at the
last builders meeting, it's also a good idea to use <2> ST-31's up
the middle of the belly, rather than one over the crease, where
rivets can flatten the crease.

[rebel-builders] Rebel baggage floor thickness

Since I had to scratch my head for a moment about this so I thought some
further explanation might be required. It turns out that many builders
don't like to put a rivets on the forward and aft stiffening creases
that are on the outer fuselage skins. So instead of running a forward
and aft channel directly above the crease in the center of the fuselage
bottom skin, they have run two channels (one on each side of the crease)
as they were putting in extra channels for stiffening the floor anyway.
I put in extra channels forward and aft, and also side to side, in the
baggage area and am so far happy with the 0.020 floor thickness.

Another observation was that the top hat cover (with the screws close
together like the manual says) over the control cables also supports the
floor similar to having extra channels under the center of the floor.
So extra channels forward and aft under the top hat cover are perhaps
redundant.

[rebel-builders] Rebel baggage floor thickness

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Thanks Ken, Bob, Al,
I already have 2 for/aft channels the length of the rear baggage floor
because I am running the the elevator/rudder cables under floor. I have them
spaced 4" appart I think, and I will have that section of floor removable.
Obviously I won't be using the hat section cover. I was thinking of using
some pieces of the hat section riveted to the inside of the baggage floor as
stiffeners between A and B. What do you think, should I just use regular
ST-31? It's just that I'm sick of making all the brackets to attach the
sections of ST-31 together. I figured the hat section under-floor would make
it much stiffer without the extra hastle.
Thanks again.

[rebel-builders] Rebel baggage floor thickness

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Hey, Jesse, although it's been a long, long time, but I still remember well messing with all those ST31's and brackets, and curved panels when doing the fuselage floor. It definitely tested my patience, as I recall, and took a lot more time than I expected, so you've got my sympathies. What helped, though, was not riveting the fuse sides and top, so that I could more easily access everything for fitting. It took a lot of clecos, but that sure helped. Good luck, and sounds like you're moving right along though.

[rebel-builders] Rebel baggage floor thickness

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:35 am

Thanks for the moral support Walter,
Yes, it is a real pain. Like you said though, I haven't riveted anything
yet, so I have removed the sides and top, allowing me to build the floor
with my feet standing comfortably on my workshop floor. I can't imagine what
a huge pain it would be to do all that work while laying on a board.

Adding my thanks in here too as I am at the point of drilling and riviting on
the sides, top and bottom. Will wait for sure on the riveting now after this
advice.
