[rebel-builders] Which is the better engine mount

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:26 am

Which is the best mount? Which ever one fits the engine that you get a deal
on! Simple as that....no noticeable difference behind the stick flying a
conical or dynafocal mounted engine in a Rebel. It's not conical or
dynafocal that is lighter or heavier...its' wide deck or narrow decks that
have a weight difference as well as some models have heavier cranks.
Wouldn't let any of that hinder a deal you stir up for an engine!

If you go with the dynafocal just be sure to leave clearance to the cowl
from the airbox, wiring a bit looser, primer lines with good anti-vibe loops
etc..... cause they move around like mad compared to a conical mounted
engine.

Okay guys I'm thinking WAY ahead here. But I find the
occasional decent deal on 0-320's and am wondering
what is the prefered type of mount? Conical or
Dynafocal? I have read that one is lighter than the
other and one is also better as far as vibration.
I have an 0-320D2J case that I may rebuild but from
some of the engines I have seen it may just be better
to pick up a running engine and rebuild mine later.
Thanks,
Keith

[rebel-builders] Which is the better engine mount

Post by Walter Klatt » Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:26 am

I am starting to think the conical mount is better on the Rebel. I am
nearing 400 hours on mine now, and my carb heat box is still good. A lot of
others I've seen have had the shaft wear due to vibration, and these were on
dynafocal mount engines.

Also, here's a long shot. I wonder if conical mount 0320's are easier on the
Warp Drive props, too. Yours, Wayne, and mine have never had root collar
cracking, and I believe yours is a conical mount, too. Mine is also a narrow
deck.

I have also flown behind both conical and dynofocal Rebels and did not
notice any difference in vibration. In fact, I think mine is quite smooth. I
can't believe that my engine is just better balanced.

[rebel-builders] Which is the better engine mount

Yep...air box for sure. The Elite I have here has the bushings worn right
out of it and shaft was running on the steel box. 180HP Dynafocal.

Prop's a long shot for sure Walter. Jack Wiebe's engine was a conical and he
went thru a few sets of blades. He was a 160HP though....but did keep it at
Hamilton where the taxi time on pavement was very long to the active. I
contend part of what has saved mine is the fact that I fire up on the
grass...the rpm is up around 1400 taxing and them I'm off into the air. Now
that I'm on amphibs I'll have to keep a close eye on it with the one
mag/rough run 500 rpm idle heading for the dock.

I'll second (third ?) the air box - only got about 200 hours out of

shot - one side worse, but both badly worn !! That engine really
hops around ! Never had a problem with conicals on other Rebels ...

available from EAA. He has quite helpful, in depth comments about the
pros and cons of each mount type -- not to mention a lot of other good info.

Brian and all,

Thanks. I hadn't thought about needing a different
cowl depending on the mount chosen.

Seems like the best style mount though is the conical.
Now to find an engine that requires that style mount.
The speed that I am building though I have plenty of
time to look.

Lots of conflicting options ! Unless you already have a cowl,
don't worry about it until you do get an engine. :-)
You already know I prefer the 4 door metal cowl, for ease of

Hey Bob,
Yep, I don't know why I try to park all these little tidbits in my
brain. ...better to wait till I'm there ...just champin at the bit I guess.

But that does bring up another question. I see that setting the tail offset for
direction of prop comes pretty soon in the fuselage construction. I'm hoping
it's fairly easy to hold off on that -- any problems that you know of? Ya see,
my two favorite engine choices are an 0320 or hoping George comes out with
that R-263, and they turn opposite directions.

Could someone clarify which 0320 engine mount works with the MAM
speed
cowl? Also, unless there are too many variations, which 0320 models

that mount?
Thanks,
