Scale for measuring Pro-seal

Post by Keith Leitch » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

What do most of you guys use when weighing out the
pro-seal for mixing. Where to purchase a reasonable
scale I guess is the question.
Thanks,
Keith

Scale for measuring Pro-seal

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

Although I agree with seeking an accurate measurement the Aircraft Mechanic
(IA) at the local FBO told me that she just eyeballs it and has never had
any trouble. Assuming this is true it would appear that ProSeal has a fair
tolerance for a less than perfect mix. I'm sure you would never get a
ProSeal rep to admit that.

Jeff McMurrer

Scale for measuring Pro-seal

Post by Jeff McMurrer » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

We just use a digital food weighing scale, can be purchased anywhere. Mixing proseal by eye to a nice grey color, that all depends on what you constitute as "grey". Proseal is supplied in a ratio mix of 100 to 10 (10 to 1), why not use it... Drying time all depends on temp and humidity, if not done properly, you may be waiting longer than you want for it to dry.

There's nothing better than having a non leaking wing. Well there may be a few things better......

Scale for measuring Pro-seal

Post by Robert and Olga Johnson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

Keith: I made a simple balance beam of 10 to 1 ratio. Proseal on the long
end , Black crap on the short end. When I have an equal balance, I remove,
mix and use. Beam must obviously be balanced prior to beginning.- Bob J

Scale for measuring Pro-seal

Post by Ken » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

IIRC there is progressive small measureable degradation of proseal as
you deviate more than 1% from the 10:1 ratio so I think it is good to
try and keep it within about 10%. I could be wrong but that's what I
seem to recall from the factory seminar at OSK?? I use a triple beam
balance because it is repeatably accurate to better than one tenth gm
for small batches - overkill perhaps but I always wanted one anyway ;)

Seriously though if the electronic scale is only accurate to 1 gm you
might as well not bother using it for small batches. When I looked at
typical small electronic scales last, they were all only accurate to 1
or often 2 gms. I mixed a number of 30 to 50 gm batches which means 3 or
5 gm of hardener. A 1 gm error is 33% of 3 gms and indeed you can
probably do as well or better by guessing! Such as scale can't guarantee
better than 10% ratio even when mixing 110 gm of product and I didn't
mix any batches that large...
