Amphib float building tip - main gear mechanism

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:53 pm

Thought I'd throw this up while I'm building this set. MAM's "hold to the
line/drill and cleco" on the FL-201/202's (that hold all the main gear
components that swing) just doesn't cut it if you expect the mechanism to
swing right and not bind. Also why guess at the positioning width...use the
mating components to be sure it's right!

When you get to the stage of building bulkhead "G" take all 4 of the gear
attach brackets and place them on G. Then mount BOTH of the main gear
retract toggle plates..with one attached to each end of the FL201/202's and
include the proper spacers. Then clamp the open ends of both toggle plates
together with spring clamps and this holds all four of the attach plates
perfectly square... so everything will pivot properly.....hinge bolts will
install cleanly etc.

Doing each FL-201/202 by sight per the manual will have the pivot holes
offset with each other no matter how hard you try to be accurate and it
takes very little vertical misalignment to cause binding.

The way I do it makes it easy as pie. Put the assembly together as pictured.
Line the inner attach brackets up with the lines marked in the manual and
drill and cleco the bottom of each inner bracket. Then drill the top holes
on the two inners. Then you can do the outer two brackets the same way while
holding them light pressure to allow a slight clearance in the pivot area.

Cheers,
Wayne

While you have that manual handy Ken....make sure the dimension given from
the center line of "G" to the pivot/bearing face of the inner attach
brackets is 2&15/16" and not 3" as it was in the original manual. Howard did
the bulkheads in his original set of floats before handing them over to me
to complete the rest. He had followed the manual and put them 3" over. Then
when I got to installing the gear it wouldn't fit and I had to machine the
toggle plate pivot area 1/16th to fit and the trailing arms as well to keep
things square....and why I highly suggested to use the mating parts for set
up before drilling.

And one other thing on Bulkhead "G". The manual tells you to rivet and seal
the FL-37's (lower edge angles) at this point. DO NOT do so! If you do it
will be near impossible to drill the doubling angle/rear bottom skins onto
the FL-36 angles. Let alone rivet them.
