Elite aileron settings

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

Well, Mike, That's a good question. Somewhere in the instructions, it says
that the flaps have 10* reflex, and somewhere else it says that they're
flush with the top of the cabin. The trouble is, that's not the same thing.
I rigged mine 10* above the extended lower surface of the wing, which puts
the top of the flap trailing edge about 3/4" below the top of the cabin.
Somewhere, I also saw a Murphy photo which showed the flap fairing flush
with the top of the cabin, but angled down about 3/4" between the fus and
the flap. It was so crude it looked like it had been done with a baseball
bat! Anyway, flush with the top of the cabin would be a ridiculous amount
of reflex, so I my fairings are in line with the flaps, and are 3/4" below
the cabin top at the TE.

Of course, the ailerons are in line with the flap, and with this setup I
found that the supplied tips do not line up with the ailerons, so I had to
do major surgery on the tips to get them to line up. I have some pics, but
somehow my Wildcat password, so unable to upload until I re-register.

I rigged one side today and I get the following:
Full stick with out stops R/L, 12 degrees up
Full stick with out stops opposite, 12 degrees down
With full flaps (30 degrees) at nuetral stick, 15 degrees down
With full flaps, stick moved full R/L, 5 degrees down
With full flaps, stick moved full opposite, 30 degrees down
I am using a good carpenters level with a moveable dial vial. I think it
is
with in a degree or 2.
I also notice quite a bit of slack in flap cable when using ailerons,
about
1/8". Also when grabing flap and checking tightness, there seems to be
quite
a bit of flex in the root rib. The flaps and ailerons are lined up in
nuetral.

Elite aileron settings

Post by Mike Betti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

Thanks Al, Bob,
What I find in my manual is in the controls section it calls for 5 degrees
reflex. This makes since because the flap has a 2 different angled surfaces
of 5 degrees on the bottom. If you make the bottom leading edge surface of
the flaps 0, the trailing flap edge is then at 5. If I go any more than 5,
the leading edge actually starts to drop below the plane of the wing and
probably adds drag.
Keith and Al,
Do you know how many degrees of aileron movement you have from neutral each
way? I'm only getting 11 or 12 degrees and I don't see where I could gain
anymore with out changing the geometry. One section in the manual shows the
aileron being adjusted from neutral, up 5-1/4" at the trailing edge. With 11
degrees I only get about 3" at best. Also, when I move the stick I don't
feel any slack anywhere, but if I grab an aileron and move it up and down
quickly, I feel a bunch of slack coming from somewhere. I don't know if it's
from the flap mechanism moving or what.
Wayne,
Since you put more of these together than any one, could you tell me how
many threads should show on the hiem joints after they are adjusted?
Thanks all,
Mike Betti

Elite aileron settings

All I can offer on the rod ends Mike is to make sure you are using the full
thread depth of the tube end. Other than that they can end up anywhere.

On the left/right stick to aileron movement...note that on the Rebel I
always end up grinding the stick opening in the control tube in at least one
spot to get more stick travel. Suspect it's no different in the
Elite...since it's the same set up in the cabin. If the stick stop is not
hitting (or getting darn close) to the control tube then you need to open up
the stick hole to suit. Don't forget to drill those stick stops as well 3/16
for AN3 bolts and a few washers for a positive stop on final set up.

9 washers seems like a heck of a stack. Three or four is generally the
rule...but don't take that verbatum..been a long day. I'll have a peak at
the 4 examples in the hangar tomorrow after I go vote to try and keep our
country...our country! LOL

KEITH OLIVER

Elite aileron settings

Post by KEITH OLIVER » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

I get about 20 degrees each way from neutral, now for the rest of the story
I am beginning to realize that the correct movement will not be obtained
until the teleflex cable is set up and properly
adjusted.
Pay particular attention to figs 15.6.3 mixer horn, 15.8.16 mixer arm
placement and 15.10.16 teleflex cable & mixer arm
The text is as always almost useless.

I was thinking the teleflex cable pulled but it now looks as if it pushes on
the mixer arm. This means that the mixer arm in the neutral position needs
not to rest on the bottom of the slide but higher, thus when flaps are used
the mixer horn lowers pulling both ailerons in steps towards the missing 40
Degrees ???
I have either now figured this out or am totally lost.

Thanks
all, Mike Betti 771E

I rigged one side today and I get the following:
Full stick with out stops R/L, 12 degrees up
Full stick with out stops opposite, 12 degrees down
With full flaps (30 degrees) at nuetral stick, 15 degrees down
With full flaps, stick moved full R/L, 5 degrees down With full
flaps, stick moved full opposite, 30 degrees down I am using a good
carpenters level with a moveable dial vial. I think it
is
with in a degree or 2.
I also notice quite a bit of slack in flap cable when using ailerons,
about
1/8". Also when grabing flap and checking tightness, there seems to be
quite
a bit of flex in the root rib. The flaps and ailerons are lined up in
nuetral.

Elite aileron settings

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

The mixer is up when the flaps are retracted. I used a piece of 1 1/2" x
1/4" scrap in the mixer guide slot to hold it in the up position when I was
rigging everything. I have own design electric flaps, with no Teleflex
cable, so no sloppiness problems. The mixer is actuated by a pushrod direct
from the flap torque tube, which in my case is located aft of the aileron
torque tube.

I agress with Wayne; the outboard ends of the control column (where the 1/2"
wide rings are located) required quite a bit of grinding to get enough
movement. So locate the rivets at 45* from the verical/horizontal, or
you'll wind up grinding the rivets away.

On the little pushrod from the control column to the forward aileron
bellcrank, I used (per Ralph Baker's suggestion) the ACS rotating coupling
to allow unimpeded movement of the column in the up/down direction. The
Murphy way of allowing one of the coupling's threads to rotate seemed
dubious. Back in the UK, the Morris Minor lower steering bearings were like
that, and the old ones used to wind up with a retracting gear!

Al,
A quick look through the bearings section of the Spruce catalog and I don't
see the rotating coupling you're talking about. Can you give me a vector? It
sounds like a good thing.
Thanks.

Elite aileron settings

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

It's the "Rod end swivel bearing", P/N 05-01021, tucked away at the bottom
of p. 137 in the 05-06 catalog. It just need turned down a little to slip
inside the 3/4" pushrod tubing (it's 3/4" in diameter itself). There's lots
of meat to do this. I Have a pic. of this if that's of interest.

Elite aileron settings

Post by Mike Betti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

Thanks Al,
I don't get what you mean about the rivets in the way. What I see is just
inboard of the sticks I needed to grind out and was able to pickup a few
degrees, down to about 6 washers under stops. If I go any more I run into
clearance problems at the equalizer mounted to the flap arm behind the
pilot. The pushrod ends behind the pilot bottom out on the equalizer itself.
I noticed that maybe I don't have those two pushrods that go up the the
torque tubes behind the pilot adjusted right. I need to get the angles to
match as shown in the manual. Right now the two arms on the torque tubes are
even with each other in nuetral. Kind of a hard one to measure the angles.
Anyone know about how far apart the two levers up on the roof are from each
other in nuetral? Also is the longer pushrod (1/4" longer) in the front or
rear?
Thanks,
Mike Betti

On the little pushrod from the control column to the forward aileron
bellcrank, I used (per Ralph Baker's suggestion) the ACS rotating coupling
to allow unimpeded movement of the column in the up/down direction. The
Murphy way of allowing one of the coupling's threads to rotate seemed
dubious. Back in the UK, the Morris Minor lower steering bearings were
like
that, and the old ones used to wind up with a retracting gear!

story
I am beginning to realize that the correct movement will not be obtained
until the teleflex cable is set up and properly
adjusted.
Pay particular attention to figs 15.6.3 mixer horn, 15.8.16 mixer arm
placement and 15.10.16 teleflex cable & mixer arm
The text is as always almost useless.

I was thinking the teleflex cable pulled but it now looks as if it pushes
on
the mixer arm. This means that the mixer arm in the neutral position
needs
not to rest on the bottom of the slide but higher, thus when flaps are
used
the mixer horn lowers pulling both ailerons in steps towards the missing
40
Degrees ???
I have either now figured this out or am totally lost.

Thanks Al, Bob,
What I find in my manual is in the controls section it calls for 5
degrees
reflex. This makes since because the flap has a 2 different angled
surfaces
of 5 degrees on the bottom. If you make the bottom leading edge surface
of
the flaps 0, the trailing flap edge is then at 5. If I go any more than
5,
the leading edge actually starts to drop below the plane of the wing and
probably adds drag.
Keith and Al,
Do you know how many degrees of aileron movement you have from neutral
each
way? I'm only getting 11 or 12 degrees and I don't see where I could gain
anymore with out changing the geometry. One section in the manual shows
the
aileron being adjusted from neutral, up 5-1/4" at the trailing edge. With
11
degrees I only get about 3" at best. Also, when I move the stick I don't
feel any slack anywhere, but if I grab an aileron and move it up and down
quickly, I feel a bunch of slack coming from somewhere. I don't know if
it's
from the flap mechanism moving or what.
Wayne,
Since you put more of these together than any one, could you tell me how
many threads should show on the hiem joints after they are adjusted?
Thanks
all, Mike Betti 771E

Elite aileron settings

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:45 pm

Mike...checked the "fleet". The Elite has 3 washers under left and 4 under
right stick stop. One rebel has 4 under each side and mine has 5 washers
under each side.

As for that push pull tube between the torque tube horn and the aileron
horn. The Elite is WAY longer than spec at 8 1/4". Me thinks I'll be having
a good look at the "throws" before she flies out of here. Howards is 6 5/8"
(center of rod end to center of rod end) and mine are 6 1/8"

As for the "equalizer" as you call it...tubes should not be bottoming on it.
Space them out further with longer bolts and more washers if you need to.

Front or rear..can't remember!

Thanks Al,
I don't get what you mean about the rivets in the way. What I see is just
inboard of the sticks I needed to grind out and was able to pickup a few
degrees, down to about 6 washers under stops. If I go any more I run into
clearance problems at the equalizer mounted to the flap arm behind the
pilot. The pushrod ends behind the pilot bottom out on the equalizer
itself.
I noticed that maybe I don't have those two pushrods that go up the the
torque tubes behind the pilot adjusted right. I need to get the angles to
match as shown in the manual. Right now the two arms on the torque tubes
are
even with each other in nuetral. Kind of a hard one to measure the angles.
Anyone know about how far apart the two levers up on the roof are from
each
other in nuetral? Also is the longer pushrod (1/4" longer) in the front or
rear?

It's the "Rod end swivel bearing", P/N 05-01021, tucked away at the bottom
of p. 137 in the 05-06 catalog. It just need turned down a little to slip
inside the 3/4" pushrod tubing (it's 3/4" in diameter itself). There's
lots
of meat to do this. I Have a pic. of this if that's of interest.
