intercoms & radios

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:32 pm

If you want an inexpensive comm with a good display, have a look at
the VAL COM - usually about $695 - and for an extra $75, they will
supply the wiring & jacks, completed & ready to mount. Had one,
flew several - worked great, and the display automatically dims
for night flying. Did use a separate intercom - have seen too
many hassles with built-in ones.

You will likely need a line filter for generator/alternator
noise ....

The Icom A-200 has a built in intercom as well. Very poorly documented
and no obvious squelch adjustment. I didn't use it and don't know if it
is VOX or PTT.

Glad U threw in the last line Bob! Good (but cheap) radio...bad for line
noise squeal. Taken care of best with a positive line filter right before
the radio.

intercoms & radios

Post by ray.mason » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:33 pm

I have the Icom 200 and use the built in intercomm. As mentioned very poor
documentation. It has a PTT but I wired it to a toggle switch so it is either
in intercom mode or transmit mode.

intercoms & radios

Post by Bill Delcambre » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:33 pm

Gents,

For my $$$, there isn't a better intercomm made than the one from PS
engineering. I put an early version in a (very noisy) homebuilt lots of
years ago. The feature that impressed me and a lot of others, is the
individual squelch controls. This allows you to correctly squelch mic
inputs from different headsets or differing noise environments, like when
your buddy insists on directing the vent directly at his face. A friend of
mine always insisted on using one of these 'mini-ear-bud' type headsets, but
I used David Clarks. The squelch settings were vastly different. Several
times, he told me that mine was the only plane he'd ever used the ear bud
thing, that allowed conversations with different makes of headsets. I later
upgraded to their audio panel and was equally impressed.

My $0.02

Bill Delcambre

intercoms & radios

Post by Bill Delcambre » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:33 pm

The first one I had was the PM1000. Great performance, basic model. Later,
I upgraded to the PMA6000 unit, which is a full function audio panel, with
marker beacon indicators. I always liked the ability to have 4 frequencies
available with the dual flip-flop comms and the PMA6000 having this neat
'swap' switch. Flying from a class C airport, I'd have both approaches,
tower and ground all available by pushing a button or clicking a knob. Very
good unit.

steve whitenect

intercoms & radios

Post by steve whitenect » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:33 pm

Charlie E was enquiring about the Garmin SL40 not being able to monitor the
side freq with the intercom on. I lit it up in the garage and both icons
are shown so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
