Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:23 pm

Better be fast on your feet if it happens Mike! Supplimental heat must be
listed on your policy as well!

Boats are covered to $1500 on most house policies. Anything else has to be
valued and paid for including cars!

I have State Farm too. I'll have to check that out. At least
everything
except the avionics and my gear box is automotive. A custom, aluminum
car.
Or better yet, an airboat. I wonder if there is an airboat exclusion?

Builder's insurance

Post by wagnerb » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

I know you guys are just joking around, but submitting a claim like a "wind
tunnel" or "dog house" would just end up with a "bad faith" denial of
coverage; insurance companies have no sense of humour whatsoever.

I am a lawyer in Calgary and I spend a lot of my time sueing and defending
insurance companies. Some insurance companies seem to take the position that
they are in the business of taking your premiums, not paying your claims. Of
course, I only see the ugly side of things, but it does happen an awful lot,
otherwise I might have to find "honest" work.

I haven't yet come across a case yet where someone claimed a loss for an
aircraft in his garage (built or not), but I have a sneaking suspicion that
many adjusters would simply refuse such a claim on principle. The principle
being, "I've never heard of such a thing, so we're not covering it."

Of course, depending on the wording of the policy - and whether you've told
them what's in the garage - the insurer might be legally obliged to pay. A
safe and easy thing to do is simply send an inventory of the entire house and
garage contents, with photos, and ask them to tell you what's *not* covered
under your current policy.

And keep a copy in a place not likely to catch fire. If the insurer doesn't
write back with a fairly clear indication that you need excess insurance,
you've at least got a leg to stand on if/when you ever have to make a claim.
Or, more importantly, enforce your rights under your policy of insurance.

Believe me, going through the exercise of sending an inventory in is a lot
cheaper than litigating the issue! It's not foolproof, but it's an easy way
of giving yourself some comfort about your insurance coverage.

Builder's insurance

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

Kinda like why I hold onto the intitial insurance work sheet my broker
filled out for my property...that clearly states the one 5000 sq ft building
is an Aircraft Hangar. They insured me for replacement value knowlingly with
that description right on the application......so as far as my broker is
concerned they (Royal) have to cover it as such and can't deny claims
because an airplane caused a fire etc...even though the fine print of every
policy states otherwise.
