Window placement
Window placement
Could someone with an Elite measure the side window in the door for me.
I'm looking for the dimension from the top of the door opening down to
the top of the door window, and from the top of the door opening to the
bottom of the door window. What I'm trying to do is place my sidelight
doubler that goes behind the door before I actually install the door. I
want to get that hole cut along with the skylights prior to spraying
painting the interior.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Hi Mike
Do you mean the position of the small side window (early a/c had round ones,
now they are almost square) located BEHIND the door relative to the door /
roof etc ??

Window placement
Nigel,
Correct, but the dimensions I need are for the door window itself so I know where it ends up on the aircraft and then I can use those measurements to locate the small side window. I don't have the door made yet so I'm trying to see where the glass would end up and then base my side window off of that so they match up somewhat. I want to take the given measurements and transfer them to my fuselage so I can visually see where the door window is. If that makes any sense.

Window placement
Hi Mike
I placed mine based on photo's of other peoples, but it's as follows.
Side distance from back of door frame to forward vertical cut for window = 3
1/16 "
Side distance from rear vertical cut for window to edge of fus panel with
window in it = 3 1/16"
Roof line down to front of top line in window cut = 7"
Roof line down to rear of top line in window cut = 6 1/4"
Hope this helps ( I taped my window doublers in place and stood back to
check the position looked the same as photo's of other builders before I cut
anything)

Window placement
Ok thanks,
But what I really needed was the dimension from the door opening in the
fuselage to the top of the window and bottom of window when the door is
closed. The first dimension should be around 1.25" and then the second
dimension should be what ever the clear viewing of the window is in height
added to that. Sorry for being a pain. Also, do the doublers go on the
inside and what do you use for a sealant. I received some sort of sealant
with the kit and I don't know it is saved for the windshield or side/roof
lights. It's called Adthane. Do you leave the lexan protective film on until
after painting of exterior or can you mask it off with tape ok? I was
thinking that the film may interfere with the sealant.
Thanks again,
Mike Betti

Hi Mike
I'll reply to you off list with some pictures to help you with the
positioning.
I will remove the lexan film covering before putting in the windows with the
supplied bostick sealant, and then cover them up again to prevent damage
after it has set.
The doublers go on the inside for all roof and side windows.

Nigel,
Is that tube of sealant that comes in the kit supposed to be used for the

closed. The first dimension should be around 1.25" and then the second
dimension should be what ever the clear viewing of the window is in
height
added to that. Sorry for being a pain. Also, do the doublers go on the
inside and what do you use for a sealant. I received some sort of sealant
with the kit and I don't know it is saved for the windshield or side/roof
lights. It's called Adthane. Do you leave the lexan protective film on
until
after painting of exterior or can you mask it off with tape ok? I was
thinking that the film may interfere with the sealant.
Thanks again,
Mike Betti

Hi Mike
I placed mine based on photo's of other peoples, but it's as follows.
Side distance from back of door frame to forward vertical cut for window
=
3
1/16 "
Side distance from rear vertical cut for window to edge of fus panel with
window in it = 3 1/16"
Roof line down to front of top line in window cut = 7"
Roof line down to rear of top line in window cut = 6 1/4"
Hope this helps ( I taped my window doublers in place and stood back to
check the position looked the same as photo's of other builders before I
cut

Correct, but the dimensions I need are for the door window itself so I
know
where it ends up on the aircraft and then I can use those measurements to
locate the small side window. I don't have the door made yet so I'm
trying
to see where the glass would end up and then base my side window off of
that
so they match up somewhat. I want to take the given measurements and
transfer them to my fuselage so I can visually see where the door window
is.
If that makes any sense.

I'm looking for the dimension from the top of the door opening down to

want to get that hole cut along with the skylights prior to spraying

Window placement
Hi Mike
I'm in exactly the same position right now - I guess you must use something
for the skylights and small side windows so I'm going to use the tube for
those - also I'll have to order some more from the USA as Bostik don't stock
it in the UK.
If I order a couple of extra tubes I'll hopefully have a tube fresh for the
windscreen if I need it.
Planning on removing the protective cover sheets on both sides just prior to
install, then covering both sides with cling wrap after the glue has cured
to protect the surface.

Mike and Nigel,
I just finished re-installing FOKM's windscreen using butyl tape. It had
been installed originally by Wayne with the same technique. It came out
beautifully, had never leaked a bit, and went back in with ease. I would
strongly recommend this technique as the material is workable into fine
lines and easily moved around. It can be purchased at most automotive
parts dealers and is commonly used for windshield installations in
cars.

dimension should be what ever the clear viewing of the window is in

added to that. Sorry for being a pain. Also, do the doublers go on the

with the kit and I don't know it is saved for the windshield or side/roof

after painting of exterior or can you mask it off with tape ok? I was
thinking that the film may interfere with the sealant.

The concern I have with using the caulk tube sealant is how much do you put in the joint. And depending on how close to the edge of parts will determine how much is going to squeeze out at the lens edge. I'm concerned on getting this cleaned up at the edge with out smearing into the viewable area. I don't know what to expect for the clean up of this product with out eating the plastic.
I was thinking maybe keep the sealant back away from the edges so none sqeezes out and then go back and make a filet joint around the perimeter?

Nigel,
Is that tube of sealant that comes in the kit supposed to be used for the
skylights or for the windshield? Once I open it, it will have to be usedone purpose or the other.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Hi Mike
I'll reply to you off list with some pictures to help you with the
positioning.
I will remove the lexan film covering before putting in the windows
damagethe
supplied bostick sealant, and then cover them up again to prevent
tosealantafter it has set.
The doublers go on the inside for all roof and side windows.

Ok thanks,
But what I really needed was the dimension from the door opening in the
fuselage to the top of the window and bottom of window when the door is
closed. The first dimension should be around 1.25" and then the second
dimension should be what ever the clear viewing of the window is in
height
added to that. Sorry for being a pain. Also, do the doublers go on the
inside and what do you use for a sealant. I received some sort ofside/roofwith the kit and I don't know it is saved for the windshield orwindowlights. It's called Adthane. Do you leave the lexan protective film on
until
after painting of exterior or can you mask it off with tape ok? I was
thinking that the film may interfere with the sealant.
Thanks again,
Mike Betti

Nigel,
Thanks for your help. How did you make out with the masking tape trick for
installing the skylights?

Hi Mike
I'm in exactly the same position right now - I guess you must use
something
for the skylights and small side windows so I'm going to use the tube for
those - also I'll have to order some more from the USA as Bostik don't
stock
it in the UK.
If I order a couple of extra tubes I'll hopefully have a tube fresh for
the
windscreen if I need it.
Planning on removing the protective cover sheets on both sides just prior
to
install, then covering both sides with cling wrap after the glue has cured
to protect the surface.

Hi Mike
I placed mine based on photo's of other peoples, but it's as follows.
Side distance from back of door frame to forward vertical cut for window
=
3
1/16 "
Side distance from rear vertical cut for window to edge of fus panel
with
window in it = 3 1/16"
Roof line down to front of top line in window cut = 7"
Roof line down to rear of top line in window cut = 6 1/4"
Hope this helps ( I taped my window doublers in place and stood back to
check the position looked the same as photo's of other builders before I
cut
anything)

Nigel,
Correct, but the dimensions I need are for the door window itself so I
know
where it ends up on the aircraft and then I can use those measurements
to
locate the small side window. I don't have the door made yet so I'm
trying
to see where the glass would end up and then base my side window off of
that
so they match up somewhat. I want to take the given measurements and
transfer them to my fuselage so I can visually see where the door window
is.
If that makes any sense.
