Aluminum wingtips (what I really want to do with my 2 weeks)
Aluminum wingtips (what I really want to do with my 2 weeks)
I haven't heard from Dave Fife for months, so I've been considering building
my own Hoerner tips. Using hotwire cut foam to make one-off fiberglass tips
would be an option also, but I thought it would be really cool to have an
all metal wing. It shouldn't be that hard really, the trickiest part I think
would be establishing the plane of the upswept end plate so the top and
bottom sheets can be trimmed in the right place. I was thinking of using a
laser that is normal to the desired plane of the end plate that can pivot on
that plane. Once the top and bottom skins were clecoed to the wing with
extra length hanging beyond the desired end plate location you could easily
use the laser to mark the trim lines. There would only be three basic pieces
to each tip; top and bottom skins flat wrapped to the airfoil shape right on
the wing, and the end plate which would be totally flat as described, or you
could put in some under camber (still no compound curve) pretty easily. The
coolest part is that once you had the outline of the three pieces you could
just duplicate them for the other wing and other airplanes, as opposed to
foam and glass where you have to make a plug for both wings. The other
tricky part I guess is joining the three pieces. I was thinking the the
bottom seam being an obtuse angle could use a tab formed from an extra strip
on the bottom of the end plate, using fluting pliers or a shrinker. The
upper seam being much sharper would probably require a separate joiner strip
made from a bent V section. It would require some extreme forming to fit the
top of the airfoil but again, flutes, shrinker and/or notches should do the
trick. This piece would be mostly inside the tip anyway so doesn't have to
be pretty. Landing light cover would be simple flat wrapped Lexan in the LE
section of the tip.
Any thoughts?

Aluminum wingtips (what I really want to do with my 2 weeks)
Took some head scratching and hours. Mine are just two pieces..The sloped
and the top skin & why I said they are a bit short..but I didn't want to
play with fiberglass and figured the hoerner at this length = the supplied
MAM tip at the extended length....due to the vortex effect of increasing
wing span. I wasn't looking so much for a performance mod...as a way out of
playing with glass. I had to make the first pattern from steel flashing so
it was stiff enough to work with. Basically if you get the bottom/side
coming up on it's angle and left long...then take a flat object..tape a
marker to the end of it and slide the flat object along the wing..keeping it
parallel to the wing spars... to mark the wing profile on the new sheet.
This gives you a bend line for the flange to pick up the top wing extension.
I know..clear as mud...will see if I can find you some pics as they were
being built.

Prior to Dave I was going to use the Maverick tip design. MAM gave me
the section from the Maverick manual when I asked. They are similar to
hoerner's and fabric covered.

Yeah, but that's true about the whole airplane.
I'll have a look at the Maverick too. Considering all options, but using the
supplied tips is not one of them at this point. They stink. I was looking at
a friends' RV-6 wingtips and they are beautifully made The glass work and
gel coat are really really good. I wish Murphy would have invested a bit
more effort into theirs.

I might give it a try. I'd rather just pay Fife the $600. but I think he
fell off the edge of the earth or something.

Took some head scratching and hours. Mine are just two pieces..The sloped
and the top skin & why I said they are a bit short..but I didn't want to
play with fiberglass and figured the hoerner at this length = the
ofMAM tip at the extended length....due to the vortex effect of increasing
wing span. I wasn't looking so much for a performance mod...as a way out
soplaying with glass. I had to make the first pattern from steel flashing
shortit was stiff enough to work with. Basically if you get the bottom/side
coming up on it's angle and left long...then take a flat object..tape a
marker to the end of it and slide the flat object along the wing..keeping
it
parallel to the wing spars... to mark the wing profile on the new sheet.
This gives you a bend line for the flange to pick up the top wing
extension.
I know..clear as mud...will see if I can find you some pics as they were
being built.

Aluminum wingtips (what I really want to do with my 2 weeks)
Hello Jesse,
I spoke with David Fife by telephone six weeks ago; he was going to finish off the Elite prototype wing tips by the end of this year. So I guess he still is in business. He had just moved house (usual problems). I will give him a telephone call today and ask him to contact the list.
Kind regards,
Greg. Gordon.

Hello Jesse,
Tried David Fife's telephone number; received a recorded message saying "that the number was disconected or no longer in use". You and I are both back to square one!!!

Aluminum wingtips (what I really want to do with my 2 weeks)
Hi Jesse,
Well I just spent the last 2 days with Dave. He's finally got to the
bottom of the move, and he can actually see the tip molds now.
Drop him a line again and see what happens. Remember its aircrafttipps @
Yahoo.com. It's an e-mail site not a web page.
