Inspection Holes

Thanks for the replies. I think the snap cover sounds good and I should
probably keep them on the interior side? If someone comes up with a good
pt.no. of one please share.

plumbing, wiring done on the surface. I need some way of inspecting the
floor area between the outer skin and inner floor. I was thinking of
drilling a say .5" hole in the outer floor skin between every bulkhead.
Then I can use my borescope for inspections as needed. I would need to
come up with some sort of way to plug the holes which I haven't come up
with yet. Any discusion on this idea is welcome?

I haven't seen any feed back on the flap handle mounting in the rooftop
I inquired on last week. Anyway, Nigel, it looks like the handle
assembly isn't going to come out too easily for service and drilling out
of a couple rivets is going to be the least of it. So I am opting for
only boring the round holes and not notching out as instructed.

Hi Mike !

Murphy supplies a white nylon plug for the Rebel inspection points -
it's about 1" diameter, with flexible prongs to hold it in - looks like
the plugs you get for electrical boxes. They go on the outside.

Spaenaur stocks nylon snap covers in most any size you can imagine and
in several styles and a couple of colors.
Usually 100 to a box and inexpensive.

Can anyone tell me is there going to be inspection holes in the aircraft?
like in the stabs? there is no way to tighten the bolts or replace them
without these holes.
Is there going to be a certain spot? or just where conveinent?

Hi Dave
I've never noticed a rebel with inspection holes in the tail surfaces.
Many of the bolts in the wing are also not accessable either. The only
inspection holes called out by MAM are on the lower wing surface at the
strut attachment on both sides of the spar. There is a bulletin on those
(pretty sure they are included in the newer manuals) and even they were
optional. I found them handy for wiring and plumbing the pitot but don't
really think they are necessary. I did put a couple in the lower
fuselage so that the landing gear cross pieces can be removed when it
goes on floats.

As a general recommendation as you build, think ahead to anything you can do to ease future inspection, maintenance, and repair and make it as easy as possible on yourself. Add inspection holes now where you see a need. Plan how you will attach the inspection plates. MAM would have you rivet them on. Of course, they don't have to drill them off every year.

One major recommendation: add nutplates on the rear spar for aileron / flap / flaperon hinge bolts. Potential big headache if you don't and need later access. (Thanks Wayne!)
