ENGINE CHOICES

Post by LUKE&BECKY » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:39 pm

As a REBEL builder committed to an "alternative " engine choice of a subaru, I thought I would pass along a recent development of potential interest to those who had yet decided on a powerplant. Subaru will be releasing a new car in two months, the Impreza WRX, with a 2.0 liter engine rated at 227 hp! this engine is rated at 6000 rpm in the production auto and is turbocharged. If it is as bulletproof as the 2.2, it should have great potential for the REBEL.

I have been impressed with the specs and longevity of the 2.2 liter Subaru for some time; in fact had decided on it even prior to deciding on the airplane. Many articles regarding its design ( 5 main crank bearings, Alum. case, Altitude compensating MPFI, low specific fuel consumption, water cooling, etc ) and endurance testing convinced me of its application to kitplanes. My version is a 2.2 Legacy which I have modified by having the cams reground to 160 hp profile following Stratus' cam design. I have a redrive and firewall forward package from Eggenfellner Aviation and hope to be airborne in '01 - will keep the list informed as to oucomes.
Thanks to all the contributors, LUKE

Has any one had any experience with the Jaburi 3300 125 hp engine? How
does it
compare to the 912 for weight, performance and durability?

Allen,

The biggest draw back to the Jab engine is its 3300 RPM to reach 125 HP. That means a shorter prop and less efficiency for a STOL plane like the Rebel. If you were building a fast plane it would not be as big an issue for top end. For the Rebel a 912 is a much better option.

Engine Choices

Rebel Builders

One of the many reasons I chose to build the Rebel was to certify it as a
"Experimental Amateur Built Aircraft" yet build it light enough that I could
fly it under the LSA pilot rules if I have to. The choice of engines is of
course a major factor in that goal. I have looked at the obvious choices.
The 116 HP 0235 Lycoming, the 100 HP Continental 0-200 and the 100 HP Rotax
ULS.

I would like to hear comments from Rebel builders who are, or at one time
had considered installing a Rotec or a Jabiru 3300 in their Rebel.

Engine Choices

I know there's been a great deal of talk on engine choices recently. I
just received this months (March) KitPlanes and there's a 2007 Engine
Directory with all the different engine choices and prices, contact info
etc. Might be a good resource for anyone still in the market or thinking
of changing.

Cheers
Jim 333 (Rotax 912 - soon to be heard!!!)

I hear you Keith,
I have found that the only way to avoid being misled by the manual is to
fully understand what your goal is for the part you are working on. How you
achieve that goal is up to your creativity, and the experience of others.
Have you checked out Roger Hoffman's site? Until Wayne produces a full
airframe CD, it's the best all-in-one photo resource.

I really really wish Murphy would just give us blueprints and scrap that POS
manual.

Jesse,

Thank you. That is what I had figured was the
solution. I guess I was asking because of finding
other areas in the manual where I have followed it and
later needed to redo something due to not knowing what
lie ahead.

Keith,
There is no need for the stringers to extend past
the tip. The reason that
the left wing LE stringers are cut 3/4 and the right
only 3/32, is because
the reinforced LE root rib faces inboard on the left
wing, and outboard on
the right. However you measure it, just make sure
the inboard ends of all
the stringers on both wings will fit inside the root
rib.
