Stabilizer faring / Moose stability

Post by Don Boardman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:59 am

Hi Scott,
Don, you guys have the standard fairing that comes with the kit right?
Correct. Did not like the looks of the larger fairing and FWIW, had heard
that it alone did not correct the yaw instability. Keith's ventral fin
seemed to do the job when installed on the plane with the larger fairing. We
decided to simply go with the original fairing based on these observations.
I see you have the ventral but no "seafins" on the stab tips (at least in
your first flight photo). How does it handle as far as yaw goes? I know
the Montana floats and the PK benefit from as much vertical area you can
get.
Our plane flies fine with the normal fairing, Keith's ventral fin, and no
seafins. You do need to use the rudders. It's not a land plane spam can. As
a glider pilot it is second nature for me to use the rudders and I
thought/think the airplane flew/flies fine. Randy (Cherokee driver) has
learned to use the rudders and has no problem. We now have 80 hours on the
plane mostly in the water environment.

The above said we may experiment with seafins in the future as time permits
to see there effect. We also plan on extended wing tips and vortex
generators to drop TO and LDG speeds a bit. Kind of waiting for someone to
come out with a full STOL kit that includes Hornier (sp) extended tips.
Your aerocet 3500's sure look nice.
I don't have allot of time on floats in this size range. What I do know is
that the Aerocets are sweet. Easy on step, basically no proposing, continue
to accelerate on the water with not release felt on takeoff. I love them.

Good luck with the building,
Don B
