The supports for the lower engine mount attach points must be removed
and replaced. To be able to do this and still move the airplane around,
it appears I need to take the engine off.

I don't have an engine stand but do have an I-Beam mounted sliding
vertical lift which I use for lifting stuff. To avoid tying up the hoist
I plan to sling a chain around the beam at one end and hang the engine
from that while I work on the plane.

Three questions:

1. Is it safe to sling the engine from the hoop mounted on the top of
the engine? It looks like that is what its for.

2. I have the metal cowling with only the nose area made of fibreglass.
I see no particular reason to remove the prop/spinner/nosebowl from the
engine when I sling it. Any problem with this?

3. Removal of the engine can be by removing the bolts at the shock
mounts or presumably removing the bolts holding the mount to the
firewall. I would guess the shock mounts would be the normal choice but
is that correct?

Gary:

#1 Yes you can use the hook on top of the engine to lift it. This is what
it is for. I used a coma-along to lift the engine. Whatever you use as long
as it's good for say 400lbs.

#2 I would take the prop off for 2 reasons. The lifting ring on the top of
the engine is at the centre of balance. With the prop on it will be very
nose heavy. Re mounting the engine without the prop will be easier to get
around it and will be much easier to align the mounting bolts with the
engine properly balanced on the hook..Re installing the prop only takes 15
minutes.Check for the proper torque for the prop bolts.

#3 I mounted the mount on the airplane first. This worked out fine. Some
people mount the mount to the engine then the mount to the firewall with
engine attached.Both ways work.

Be glad to review this with you but will be away from the 20 - 29.

In removing the engine (O320) I have two sensors that concern me.

The temperature sensor at the back of the oil screen was asserted by
someone to be sensitive to removal - breakable or something. It seems
straight forward but I don't want to break it. Is there really a problem
here?

The oil pressure sensor is mounted just above the dipstick and has a
cable of I think 4 wires wandering back to the pressure guage. The wires
have a finger tight plastic hollow nut (at right angles to the sensor
body) and a rubber seal then seem to follow around a 90* bend inside the
sensor to some connection. The sensor has a phillips screw (about a #6)
into the body on the axis of the body that looks like a release. The
screw unscrews but doesn't come out easily. Again I don't want to break
this so how do I get the wires out?

I'm sure someone must recognize what I'm babbling about here. Help : )

I sent this yesterday but presume it got dropped in the bit bucket
during the server upgrade. Sorry if it dups.

You may want to disconnect wires from the back of the instrument and pull
the wire through the firewall and leave it attached to the engine.Sorry
can't be of more help.I'm sure someone else will join in here with words of
advice.

Thanks Murray. I got it figured out and the engine is now hanging from
the main beam in the hangar. Aircraft is now ready to repair.

Garry...the oil temp sender is electric and not as "dangerous" to remove as
a capilary tube. Just unthread and tie off somewhere. When you go to install
prewind the wires a few turns backwards and then when you thread in to
tighten they will be unstressed. The oil temp plug should just lift off once
you loosen the screw.
