Rebel tail wheel <==== SUBJECT LINE RANT !!

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:48 am

-------- RANT STARTS ----------------

All you irate Moose drivers !!

PLEASE "CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE" !!!!!

I'm really getting pissed about all this whining upsetting
folks with the Murphy tailwheel on their REBELS !!!!

I've owned 3 different Rebels with the MAM tailwheel,
flown them and many others with the STANDARD MURPHY TAILWHEEL
for 15 years, and over 1,500 hours.
The ONLY landing/takeoff problem I've EVER had was :
----> "the loose nut behind the stick" !

IF the Murphy tailwheel is properly maintained, inspected,
and LUBRICATED, it will NOT cause ANY groundloop problems !
This means - keep a grease gun in the hangar, and USE IT every
2 or 3 flights, on the vertical shaft, AND the wheel, AND put
a bit of grease on your finger and wipe it on the bottom of
the slide pin that provides the kick-out action.

I repeat: THERE"S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE STANDARD <REBEL> TAILWHEEL !

For those who have used the Lycoming O-320, or other heavy
engines, and more weight in the rear to balance it, YES - use a
Scott 3200 if you want more weight in the tail, and a better ride,
because of the pneumatic tire ! This is NOT essential, but WILL
give a better experience - IF YOU CHOOSE to do it. There are a
few O-320 Rebels flying happily with the standard tailwheel !

AS for the MOOSE tailwheel - again, I never had a landing/takeoff
problem with any of the factory variations, but the old, narrow
wheel DID lean when pushing on the ground, making it a bit hard to
park easily when alone. This is a big aircraft, and you really
should have 2 people, at least. I suspect that the large tire
(Elite nosewheel) version would eliminate many of the problems.

I DO understand that the fixed mounting of the stinger can
become a problem with the Moose, and likely the Elite, over time.
This is a problem that <the builders> WILL resolve over time, and
the factory might even adapt the builder's fix for new kits...
something they have done in the past, with other suggestions !
Has Cessna EVER even hinted that they MIGHT fix the C-180 & 185 series
gear boxes ??? This is a known problem, discovered in the field,
after years of use ! P-Ponk and others have found a solution...

I have to believe that Murphy, like Cessna, did the best they
could with the initial design. OK, it's not perfect, but who is ??!!
The Moose kit is still one heck of a value buy - check out the market !
I think it was Al Paxia who said : " Guys, this is EXPERIMENTAL !
YOU get to do the design changes !! Let's get on with it !"
(Sorry if I misquoted or mis-attributed - I'm not perfect,
and neither is my memory !)

------- END OF RANT !! --------

Sorry if I offended anyone, but just had to vent ! :-)

I would just as soon see this issue resolved one way or the other by the

Just my thought, let me know what you all think??????

Thanks.

Rebel tail wheel <==== SUBJECT LINE RANT !!

Post by bosdes » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:48 am

Bob, I don't think Geert Frank would agree with you. The damage to his Rebel fuselage was extensive, and he claims it was because the tailwheel loads weren't adequately absorbed by the fuselage. Geert is hardly an inexperienced pilot, and his grass strip in New Hampshire is pretty smooth.

I see two issues running under this thread. One is the tailwheel itself, and the other is whether the fuselage can take the loads that the small tailwheel places on it. The larger the tailwheel the smaller the load that is placed on the fuselage. I have a Scott 3200 on my Aeronca Champ. The tailspring is bolted directly to the steel frame fuselage. I fly the Champ out of a very rough grass field in Nova Scotia, usually with two people on board, and I have never had a problem. A Scott tail wheel is going on my Elite, no question,
and the fuselage will be beefed up to take the loads.

"No experience necessary, just desire". Thank heavens we have this list.

Rebel tail wheel <==== SUBJECT LINE RANT !!

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:48 am

Hi Bob,
I respect your right to rant. Since you mentioned my name, I must say what I
said was its a "GREAT AIRPLANE, WITH SHITTY LANDING GEAR". I would sill buy
it again, but we all know MAM could do better!

3200. It will be the best insurance policy you ever bought. That's my
opinion
and the same advice I recieved from a very experienced pilot who would not
fly
in my first project (Kitfox with a Maule tail wheel) until I changed it. He
was right.

Rebel tail wheel <==== SUBJECT LINE RANT !!

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:51 am

Hi Al !

Sorry, poor memory - but now I do remember your quote.
Now if I could just remember who did say "This is Experimental..." !
;-) :-)

Today, I would have to agree with your comment, and I'm glad
you still like the Moose enough to buy another, even knowing what
we all know now !

Again, I'm sure Murphy, like Cessna on the 180 series gear,
did the best they could at the time. The S/R - Moose gear was a
dramatic, innovative change from the earlier gear on Murphy designs,
and was an attempt to improve on the past. The only way we learn
is to try something, then improve it. Murphy certainly doesn't have
a huge R & D department, or the resoursces to build a test airplane
and fly it for thousands of hours to prove the design - and the
kit price reflects the dearth of this expense ! I'm sure that
Darryl is willing to adapt a proven improvement - he has done
this in the past. I do have a bit of a problem with those who
expect him to pay for new parts & delivery .... Did anyone who
bought an Edsel get a FREE replacement ?? Has Cessna EVER given
ANYONE a FREE new gear box for their 180/185 ???

"Good judgement comes from experience .......

and a lot of experience comes from bad judgement !" :-)

Sorry Al - this isn't directed to you - you know that if I
ever get those 6 numbers in the lottery, you'll be the first one
to know - and you'll get a chance to build a new Moose ! ;-) :-)

Hi Bob,
I respect your right to rant. Since you mentioned my name, I must say what I
said was its a "GREAT AIRPLANE, WITH SHITTY LANDING GEAR". I would still
buy it again, but we all know MAM could do better!
