Float plane engine
Float plane engine
I'm finding the 360 engine hard to come by as either a midtime or even as a core these days. Does the Elite as a float plane have enough power with a 150hp 320? Or would I sacrifice too much?

Forgot where you are flying from Mike, but if you are in the
mountains, would highly recommend the 0360. Otherwise, 150 hp
should be OK, as long as you're not trying to get out of small
lakes. Remember, the Elite will be packing an extra 100 pounds
more than the Rebel, so your performance will be reduced
accordingly.

The old saw is there's no such thing as too much power for a float plane.
I've 130hp and definatly would like to upgrade a little more climb rate on
those hot days sure would reduce the pucker factor getting out of our
little lake at mcKellar. As it is I make my wife walk over to the next lake
and I pick her up there. I was at purple hill aviation the other day
looking at the rebel they're building with a 0-360 clone. Very impressive
if I was building again that's the way I'd go. All brand new and only a
little more money than a mid-time lyco. If you're looking at cores I'm sure
it would be cheaper than a core+rebuild. check out these engines.

Mike,
I suggest you wait until you are actually ready for the engine to make
the purchase. We spent the same $ for a "O" time rebuild from a
prominent rebuilder as the non certified brand new engines that have
come on the scene since. The Lycs don't do well sitting around and the
shorter "inop" time the better. At the rate the engine prices and
availability are changing who knows what will be possible / available
when you really need it. An example might be the canadian diesel Wankel
that is in development.

I'm not so sure that the way Mike is cranking this airplane out that he
won't be flying by this time next year! I mean, he's well into the fuselage
already, and he just got his kit this year! Amazing!!!

I'll have to look a little harder at OSH this year on that subject. I like some of the engines coming out, such at the V8 jabereau?, but I don't want to have to be their test bed. I know of two local builders, one with a Mazda and one with a Subaru and they constantly are fighting issues. The Elite with the Subaru has made 2 dead stick landings in less than 2 hours of flight, one off airport landing, no damage anyway.
I keep plugging away at it each night. Darn job during the day gets in the way though. Wife hasn't left me yet either.

Yeah Mike, I've seen your pics and you have quickly blown past me.
I'm sure others know more about Superior than I do, but I've only heard good
things about them. A little steep on the price, but a better product, lighter
too, than a rebuilt true Lyc. The Jabiru is a flat-8. It could get me
excited too, but yes, you are guinea pigging for them a little, and price --
OMG, buy a Lyc instead! Subarus and Mazdas too, from the stories I've heard,
you are asking to work on the plane for another year + AFTER first flight.
Subaru remains to have outside interest to me with increasing cost of fuel.

some of the engines coming out, such at the V8 jabereau?, but I don't wantI'll have to look a little harder at OSH this year on that subject. I
like
to
have to be their test bed. I know of two local builders, one with a Mazda
and
one with a Subaru and they constantly are fighting issues. The Elite with
the
Subaru has made 2 dead stick landings in less than 2 hours of flight, one
off
airport landing, no damage anyway.way though. Wife hasn't left me yet either.I keep plugging away at it each night. Darn job during the day gets in

Superior had a booth at the airshow in Oshawa last weekend. The main
sales pitch was on how the intake and exhaust manifolds had all rounded
and smooth corners and surfaces on the inside for smoother airflow. Also
they pushed the fact that the cast was of a better quality than a
Lyc.They had the pieces to compare and yes they weren't as rough as the
normal cast block and manifolds. The rep had flown an RV powered by the
engine in from Texas. I liked what I saw but still doing the research.
