Mike,

Well, you know MAM doesn't endorse the 0360 for the Rebel but there is not
much weight difference between the 0320 and the 0360. Maybe 20 lb. ?. I would
seriously consider it if I was building again. I know Walter has mentioned
using a 0360 if he did it again.

engine alternatives

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

I am even tempted to swap out my existing 0320 for an 0360. But
kind of hard to justify with a perfectly running 0320 with only
280 hours since the last overhaul. There are a number of new
experimental Lycoming clones available now, and they sound better
and lighter than their certified equivalents. Superior has an
XP360 version that is only 275 pounds. I wouldn't be surprised if
I could replace mine with an 0360 that is the same weight or
possibly even lighter with some of the new acc options and carbon
fiber sump. And with electronic ign and maybe higher compression,
get more than 180 hp.

Then I just might be able to make it into Snow Cap lake here
(actually it's getting out that is the problem) which for now is
only accessible by a very elite few floatplanes.

engine alternatives

Post by Terry Dazey » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

Walter:

Here are the engine specifications for Lycoming:

O320 A,E / 150HP / 244 Dry Weight

O320 B,D / 160HP / 255 Dry Weight

(L)O360 F / 180HP / 265 Dry Weight

O360 F / 180HP / 270 Dry Weight

Check it at:
http://www.lycoming.textron.com/main.js ... ineSelecti
onGuide/index.html

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Superior XP360 / 275 to 295 (depending on model)

The above is taken from the specification sheet at:

http://www.superiorairparts.com/xp360.asp

It is getting late and I could not locate the weight specifications for each
model for the Superior. They also state that the XPO320 is under
development. I emailed them concerning an approximate release date for the
O320.

You are correct. With lightweight starter, alternator, direct mounted
spin-on oil filter etc. installed, one will keep the weight pretty low.

Whatever way I go with the engine, I am planning on lightweight everything.

Food for thought . . .

I am planning to be at Arlington on the Saturday. Can't remember
if you cut back your firewall 3 inches, but I did that, so that
also helps handle the weight of a larger engine. I could also do
a new cowl, as mine has been reworked so many times, I'm sure it
packs an extra 5 or 10 pounds. There are others that produce the
0320, too, can't remember who exactly right now, but have seen it
on the net.

Walter:

I have the standard firewall, so I am thinking that O320 with all
lightweight accessories will do fine. I am starting to think about
purchasing an O320 in the near future.

We have our annual Canard BBQ on Friday evening, so, WX permitting, I am
at AWO Friday with a possible camping I will be looking forward to
seeing you and other Rebels at the affair.

learn about it sounded great.

engine alternatives

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

ECI is selling an 0-320 kit engine now for abou 17500us$ I think the
lycoming weights seem light because they probably don't include any
accessories. The plastic and carbon fibre sumps that I've found on the web
are all for injected engines Though saving 7lbs and having cooler intake
air would be sweet.
