Fuel fitting Rivets - RR-6403?

Post by Scott Hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:40 pm

My manual says to use RR 6403 rivets to attach W-159 (site gauges) and W-160 (tank
outlet). I can't seem to find any in my kit and plan to use the fuel tank rivets
instead. Is there something special about the RR 6403 rivets that I should know?

Scott,

6403 rivets are tank rivets. Tank rivets come as 6402, 6403, 6404, 6410 etc,
etc, the last two digits reflect the length!

I believe you probably should have both the 6402's and 6403's with your kit,
but this varied as time went on! Some kits were only supplied with 6402's
and us older serial # guys and gals did our tanks with normal RV1410 rivets!
(that is right, normal rivets and NO LEAKS 5 years later!) The tank fittings
are not hard to seal so any rivet will do, because you do them with the tank
"open" so coating both the shop end and the factory end of the rivet with
Proseal is possible!

Hope you have realized by now the only way to mix Proseal consistently, is
to use a digital scale and the recommended 10 to 1 weight ratio. (impossible
to measure the 8.? to 1 volume way) If you don't mix in the right quanities,
it will either set up to quickly or worse, not set up at all!! Mix with a
putty knife on a scrap piece of aluminum about 5" X 7". This will allow you
to use it all and not waste it inside a round can or similar. The flat
aluminum piece also allows you to mix it very easy (and to scrape your putty
knife on the edge) so you don't have some uneven curing problems due to
incomplete mixing! Also, go by a box of wood "Popsicle stick" style stir
sticks for filleting all the corners and coating rivet ends. I have found
these work the best and when too messed up or broken, they are worthless so
just throw away!

The worst part about the Proseal is the thought of having to use it! Once
you have it mixed up and get going on it, it's not a big deal! HOWEVER, I
still hate the thought of mixing it up, many, many fuel tanks later!!!!!!

Happy filleting,
Wayne G. O'Shea
