Started work on rebel 776 a few days ago.I plan to prime &seal with one
finish coat off paint inside off fuselage & wings.Would i still need to
dip rivets,what purpose would it serve.Also mateing all parts wet.This
site is a great asset to new builders & well worth a contribution to its
provider.

All & Glenys,
Here's my 2 cents worth. If there was anything I would change building
our Elite it would be to stick with the 44 US gallons of fuel and to
prime faying surfaces only and rivet wet! We would have been in the air
long ago instead of still building. Of the two, the corrosion proofing
is incredibly time consuming to do it right. 6061 alloy is quite
corrosion resistant and unless I were on floats in salt water not worth
it in my opinion. It also adds weight which in retrospect I would
rather have as useful load.

In either case do not forgo dipping each rivet. That assures primer at
the most critical point.

Enjoy the building process. It is indeed loaded with recreation and
education.

Hi Alvin !

Of the 2 choices, I would strongly suggest dipping the rivets
and brushing on EP-430, to assemble the parts wet !! This will
be FAR better protection than painting - in fact, painting inside really
isn't necessary if you assemble wet ! (There are other techniques for
the large flat surfaces - have a dig in the archives ...)

The idea of dipping the rivets & assembling wet is that the
epoxy primer fills gaps between pieces, preventing any moisture from
entering, AND it 'glues' things together, so the load is spread over
a larger area than just the rivet. Dipping causes the epoxy to be pulled
up inside the rivet when it is pulled. This seals the rivet, preventing water
from entering, and helps hold the mandrel, & prevent bi-metallic corrosion.
If you spray paint over rivets, very often, especially with old high-pressure
sprayers, the air flow will prevent paint from resting in the hole
in the rivets - even blow it out - and you get a leak !

I know it sounds tedious, but, especially with 2 people working,
it goes pretty quickly. Just remember to dip only about 1/8" or so
of the rivet end - if you dip too much epoxy, it gets messy, and
you could glue the jaws of your rivet gun together ! ;-)
(Don't ask how I know this .... ;-) :-) :-) )

Keep on rivetting - it IS worth it !! :-)
