Tank Fittings outside or in?

Post by Scott Hibbs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:40 pm

I was planning to put my tank fittings (W159 and 160) all on the inside
with the threaded extension poking through the skin. I notice on Wray's
Wing Manual that at least the water drain is on the outside. To Wray or
anyone else, why place the fitting on the outside, is it only for easy
access if a replacement has to be made?

Tank Fittings outside or in?

Hi Scott
The drain for getting water out of the tank must be in the lowest part of the
tank in a three point attitude. If you screw the pipe thread drain fitting
into the flange you will see it needs to be on the outside of the lower tank
skin or it will stick up into the fuel tank like a stand pipe thus not
draining out the water.

Scott, why would you want to drill a larger hole in the tanks than
necessary, to put the fitting inside? Instead of a hole just big enough to
fit the finger screen, etc., you would be drilling a hole over an inch in
diameter. This would possibly weaken the rib (since the 5 rivets holding the
fitting on aren't strong enough to have a doubler effect) and in order to
get the fitting right at the bottom of the tank you would be drilling right
to the flange bend, making it harder to seal properly and weaker! The only
item I would suggest mounting from the inside is the fuel filler neck. It
makes a much cleaner installation than being on the outside as spelled out
in the manual.I also found the pre punched hole (on an SR2500) is not large
enough and must be enlarged to allow installation this way!
