Spring gear carry through

Post by Mike Betti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

I'm full of questions today,
Does anyone know what the angle or the dimension is that needs to be cut
off of the front 2" carry through square tube on each side to match
needed profile of body? I would like to cut it before mounting rather
than having to deal with it in place. The manual says to cut it but
doesn't give any reference of how much.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Mike,

I'll get the angle measurement tomorrow off 612e, and post it. Mine were
cut to the angle of the carry through I took out that was wrecked ... from
what I can tell, it just needs to be able to make the forward side skin
angle change forward of the door post. Anyway, I'll send you a good angle
tomorrow.

Cheers, Bob 612e

Ok thanks, Al told me it is 5/8" and that looks about right. How about that
forward floor skin, does it attach with one row of rivets in the front fus5?
I'm not sure on its location. The manual just says cleco it on. Well, the
holes in the front fus5 are already at no.11 across the bottom per earler
pages of manual so it doesn't just cleco on. Also the manual says to rivet
the main floor to the bottom of the fus5 a while back also, but I didn't.

Mike,

Thanks on the website. I totally spaced out getting the angle measurement
for you today ... my bad ... was working on a C150 just a few feet away from
it too. But scratching a wrinkle in my brain says 5/8" measured from the
leading outboard edge of the forward carry through ... and snapping a line
across the top to the aft edge of the same 2x2 should be a good angle to
clear the forward side skin. Had Boy Scouts tonight ... and camped all
weekend ... plan to be back on the Elite tomorrow after work ... will verify
that 5/8" is a good number ... that is ... unless you've already cut it by
then (hehehe).

** Check your subject, does it still reflect the message? **

I'm full of questions today,
Does anyone know what the angle or the dimension is that needs to be
cut
off of the front 2" carry through square tube on each side to match
needed profile of body? I would like to cut it before mounting rather
than having to deal with it in place. The manual says to cut it but
doesn't give any reference of how much.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

Spring gear carry through

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

Think that's why MAM got smart and redimensioned the saddle location and
moved them inboard a tad..awhile ago...to increase the edge distance for the
front saddle bolt.

Mike,

Thanks on the website. I totally spaced out getting the angle
measurement
for you today ... my bad ... was working on a C150 just a few feet
away
from
it too. But scratching a wrinkle in my brain says 5/8" measured from
the
leading outboard edge of the forward carry through ... and snapping a
line
across the top to the aft edge of the same 2x2 should be a good angle
to
clear the forward side skin. Had Boy Scouts tonight ... and camped
all
weekend ... plan to be back on the Elite tomorrow after work ... will
verify
that 5/8" is a good number ... that is ... unless you've already cut
it
by
then (hehehe).

Ok thanks, Al told me it is 5/8" and that looks about right. How about
that
forward floor skin, does it attach with one row of rivets in the front
fus5?
I'm not sure on its location. The manual just says cleco it on. Well,
the
holes in the front fus5 are already at no.11 across the bottom per
earler
pages of manual so it doesn't just cleco on. Also the manual says to
rivet
the main floor to the bottom of the fus5 a while back also, but I
didn't.
I like your website!

Spring gear carry through

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

Here's a view of the edge distance your referring too Wayne ... the saddle
will overhang the carry through some on the forward hole.

http://www.aacnet.com/elite/3-06-05/DSC03167.JPG

http://www.aacnet.com/elite/3-06-05/DSC03169.JPG

Since only the left side of the fuselage took damage, the replacement carry
throughs were cut and drilled to match the ones that were initially
installed. Only change made to the carry throughs was the aluminum blocks
replacing the 2x2 angle pieces and squash tubes.

Moving the saddle holes inboard (while keeping the angle cut the same) would
indeed buy more edge distance for the fwd saddle bolt hole. Wayne, how much
was the saddle moved?

Spring gear carry through

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

Can't remember. I printed out the manual changes and threw them in the Elite
Fuselage manual I have in the shop. The manual changes are in the tech
section of the Murphy website.

Spring gear carry through

Post by steve whitenect » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:38 am

I cut mine off at 5/8's but luckly didn't have the holes drilled. That's
all I did- just moved the three holes in I believe about 3/8's of an inch
and ended with an acceptable edge distance.
