Proseal life span revisited

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

We've talked a lot about how long Proseal really is good for on this list
and how it definitely lasts longer than that 9 months on the can if
refrigerated......I put it to the test again today.

Working on welding in some patches on a steel work boat that I just had
sandblasted, that I got with the place up North. Knew my welds weren't quite
waterproof so took out a can mfg'd 7/95 yesterday to let it warm up from the
fridge. Opened it today to find it had gone hard on top and thought I might
be SOL...like an old can of paint that you decide to use a year later and
it's skinned over. Thought I was going to have to grab another can but
grabbed a pair of pliers and pulled the dried stuff out enough to get at the
nice smoothy stuff below it. Scooped out 400 Grams and then took the
activator and found it pretty dried out looking as well. Gave it a real good
stir and it got some of it's smooth shiney look back. Threw 50 grams of it
on the 400 of PRC gave a good mix (and it blended easy and quick) and spread
it where it need to go just as easy as a brand new can. Spread really nice
and got the shiney self leveling look right away. Was just out to the hangar
and the stuff has tac'd up already so I'm good to go.

Now I just hope I can paint over top of it! :O)

Wayne is it you, is it me, a typo, a new formula, or are you checking to
see if anyone is paying attention ??
Its been awhile but I thought it was 10:1 by weight or only 40 gms
hardener in 400 gm base.
Ken ;)

Proseal life span revisited

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

Guess I should have stipulated the proper mix.... so as not to confuse the
masses. Yes 10 to1 by weight and I believe 8.7 to 1 by volume. I added a bit
more (heck I guess 25% more) catalyst just in case it wasn't as potent as it
should have been!! It hardened up fine by this morning...still a bit
tacky...but I just primed the whole boat inside and out with Tremclad Primer
and it painted right over the Proseal with no sign of edge lift anywhere. I
also now know why this 16 foot steel work boat was left for neglect for so
long though...a bugger to even flip over... and I have a fork truck in the
hangar! Hopefully I can get it painted tomorrow inside and out....... so I
can get back to what's supposed to be going on around here and get CYP's
engine re-installed before the end of the day tomorrow. I want it flying
before Friday!

Cheers,
Wayne

Proseal life span revisited

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:35 am

That was the plan Jim! Not sure if Howard is too keen though, think he wants
to get inflight hull back on it before it goes into the air. I have nothing
to come down in otherwise...broke my J3 wing bow on the hangar door frame a
couple weeks ago and my Rebel is still on skis. Figured I may as well just
pull the wheel gear & skis as a unit to go to floats. Will see what happens,
maybe I'll come down in it as is, if I haven't already hoisted it to put the
floats on.

Cheers,
Wayne
