Moose - Overseas FB leaky tank fix from MAM--Poor solution

Post by Brent Blue » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:32 am

All:

The letter issued by Murphy leaking tanks contains a totally false
statement (see bold below).

The first three sets of wings built in the factory took four pressure tests
and repeated pro-sealing to try and stop leaks. In the end they had to be
sloshed in a last ditch effort to seal them.

The first two sets were rejected by the customer.

The supply of large inspection holes (the installation of which in itself
is a huge task), and a small quantity of proseal is pretty poor solution in
view of the work involved.

I have fixed my tanks using alternative methods which has cost significant
money and time.

Brent

Dear SR2500 & SR3500 Quick Build Customers:

As most of you know there is a problem with a number of the Quick Build fuel
tanks leaking. When we were first notified of this problem we had hoped
that there would be only a few occurrences; however this has not been the
case.

It has become apparent that very few Quick Build Wings built in the
Philippines do not leak. The Philippine Builder (Wright Aircraft) had
ensured us that each tank had been pressure checked. Obviously this was not
true. Leaky tanks have not been a problem with Quick Built wings assembled
at Murphy Aircraft.

At the present time thirteen of the Quick Build aircraft from the
Philippines are flying as well as 26 aircraft build from straight kits.

We strongly suggest that all builders either pressure check or fill the
tanks with fuel and let sit for a few days before installing on the
fuselage.

Murphy Aircraft will supply to all Philippine Quick Build Wing Owners the
following materials to repair their leaking tanks:

2 QT Proseal

12 Larger Inspection Covers (Part # W1011)

550 Tank Rivets

Murphy Aircraft will also be giving each Quick Build customer affected by
the leaking tanks a $500.00 credit in the Parts Department to be used on
Murphy Aircraft Manufactured Parts.

If you have Philippine Quick Built wings and are experiencing leaking tanks
please contact the shipping department. They will forward the repair kit to
you.

Sincerely,

Darryl Murphy
President, Murphy Aircraft Mfg. Ltd."

Moose - Overseas FB leaky tank fix from MAM--Poor solution

Post by Brent Blue » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:32 am

Britt:

I used very low levels of vacuum and sucked proseal into the leaks. I
started with thinned proseal and them thickened it. Takes about two
minutes per leak. You have to let dry over night and retest. I was
fortunate to have pretty defined areas of leaks and it seems to hold air
afterwards. I have not put fuel in the wings yet but will report when I do.
