Hi All,
This is my first note to the Rebel Builders web site. I talked to
the patron saint of Rebel Builders, Bob Patterson, at Oshkosh 1999.
I have Rebel Kit 429. I started construction in Minnesota, and then
moved to the Chugiak, Alaska in 1996. My Rebel is now in its third
house/garage workshop. Moving to a new home sure slows building. I
also bought a 1966 Citabria 7ECA to explore Alaska in while I was
building. On the first annual, I had to buy a new rudder and right
elevator frame and recover them. It also needed a legal radio and
GPS. It reminded me why I ordered the Rebel kit in the first place.
I wanted to have a new airframe, not a 35 year old one. So far I have
built the control surfaces, vertical and horizontal stabs and have
started on the wings. I have a question on the fuel tanks. I met a
gentleman in Oshkosh some years back who built aluminum fuel tanks on
his Rebel. He was from Texas. I know MAM does not support this because
it removes ribs in the wing bays. It does stop the fuel leaks,
however. Has anyone else made aluminum tanks or is the traditional
wet wing and proseal process the best? Is the standard fuel tanks
enough fuel and range for the northern lattitudes where gas can be
expensive and sometimes hard to find? I plan on using a O-320 engine.
Since I have just finished rebuilding my work table, a note to Roger
Hoffman: My table is perhaps overbuilt, but it is solid. I made the
table in two 4X8 sections that slide together. The legs are 4X4 posts
and I have a 2X6 frame on 16 inch centers on the top to support the
plywood top and also on the bottom to hold the parts and boxes. It was
easy to build and level. Be sure to leave a overhang space of 1/2 to a
inch on the sides so you can clamp parts to the table to work on.
Finally, a question. I have been saving the builders tips on my hard
drive. Do I need to do this or are all the notes sent to the archives?
Thanks for all the great tips and encouragement.

Bob, all messages are automatically placed in the archives on the web site.
If you post a message to the list, you should be able to find it in the
archives in under a minute, it's all automated. Also, notice that a small
note is appended to the bottom of each message with the web address for the
archives. So if a message brings on questions that you think have been
discussed before, just click on the link to the archives page, and enter a
search. All searches will search both the murphy-rebel & flying-rebels
lists. You can also view the archives year by year, and sort the view by
thread, subject, author, or date. Hopefully between the search engine, and
the different methods of sorting you will be able to find what you are
looking for. The list has generated several thousand messages since I
started it in the fall of 97, so a search is probably the quickest way to
find something.

Welcome to the list,
Mike

Welcome Bob, all messages go into the "yearly" archives, where you will find
a whole mess on the pros and cons of welded aluminum tanks (so we don't
start that arguement up again) . They leak too!!!!!!(even Maules - Dr.
friend of mines M5 sprung a leak recently and had to be repaired) Wet wing
is easier to repair if it does decide to leak! Won't if built properly.

Tank stuff is under 1999, Thead is Rebel "652" - Wing tanks

Only you can decide how much fuel you need to carry! 44 gallons U.S. equals
around 5 hours of cruise with a 150HP O-320 lyco. Almost 8 hours with the
100hp O-235 I originally had.Allowed flying from Oshkosh all the way home to
Penetang (7 1/2 hours) without fuel stop. Each Rebel wing bay holds about 7
1/2 gallons US. So if you extend both wings a bay you will have approx 59
gallons usable. Don't suggest different size tank for each wing as some have
done, because then you have a fuel management situation to add to the flying
duties! Who wants that with a gravity feed system.

Happy building,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Thanks for the compliments, Bob !!! Geez - i've been elevated
again !! - does this mean I can sell my amphibs, and just walk on
the water ?? :-) :-)

<I> would just stay with the standard tanks ! You can always
carry a spare can or 2 in the back, for the trip home. There aren't
many production aircraft with as much range as the standard Rebel ...

Have done a fair bit of flying in Citabrias - mostly towing gliders,
but did fly one from Calgary to Ontario a few years ago .... My wife
really likes 'em - right after the Super Cub, and 'way behind the Rebel ! :-)

Keep plugging away on the Rebel - you'll just LOVE the finished
airplane !! And 'the list' is here to help you, anytime !

Hello! I just recently learned about the Murphy Rebel
and I am looking to learn more. I do not have the
time to build one, however am hoping to find a used
one.

Can anyone direct me to to flight tests that might
describe the flight characteristics?

Can someone explain to me the differenced between the
the Elite and the standard rebel? Other then the gross
weight.

I did find one used for sale in Canada on wheels,
which I am looking into.

Thanks,

Travis Underwood

Welcome Travis !!

There have been MANY articles reviewing the Rebel, in most
of the major publications. If you can search their back issues, I'm
sure you'll find lots of info..... If you want to discuss it in
detail, just give me a call at (905) 457-5238 9-9 EST......

There are several Rebels with various engines for sale nearby.
Where are you, and what is your preference ?? If you are near Toronto,
you can drop in to Brampton airport, and we can go for a test flight,
almost anytime.

Post by Gregory Gordon » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:04 pm

Hello Everyone,
I have been following the Rebel discussion group for over a year now; as I
have placed an order for an Elite kit, starting with the tail and control
surfaces sub-kit, it is time I make myself known.
I have been "driving" my Piper Tomahawk for over five years now (500 odd
hours logged) and with the type of flying that I am doing I needed
something better that had good STOL characteristics, durability and the
ability to lift a little more weight safely; high speed was not a factor as
I enjoy the flying. A lot of fun research was done over the last year in
looking for a replacement aircraft.
A flight, late last year in Rick Harper's Rebel convinced me that this was
the type of plane I was looking for; unfortunately it also created a major
dilemma, a Rebel or an Elite!!!
After much procrastination and reading of the Rebel archives I elected to
proceed with the Elite.
I have persuaded Rick to be my "technical" mentor and I am also diligently
perusing Dave Ricker's Elite web page as well as the archives.
I may now need in the future to call upon the resources of the group in
helping to resolve any problems with my building of the aircraft.
So for the next couple of years I intend to keep "Tomahawking" whilst
building as I do not want to stop flying; I will later sell the Tomahawk to
fund my engine and avionics.

Kind regards to all.

Gregory Gordon.

Welcome Aboard GREGORY

I am building the Rebel but I'm sure you will really like your choice. The
building is fairly straight foreward. It does pay to read ahead to
understand how the components you are working on fit together. This will
definitely pay off avoiding a lack of judgement.( yes we do call it a
mistake) The group is really helpful with a couple of old timers( I don't
mean old, but rather a couple of seasoned builders) Who's help is really
invaluable. All the group is very appreciative of their time although there
opinion is is of their personal views and you are to proceed at your own
risk.

Welcome again and you will enjoy being with us.

G'day "EH"

G'day Folks

Thought I should briefly introduce myself.

I own a Rebel kit that arrived in April 2004. Believe it or not I have yet
to unpack it, as I was in the throes of retiring and moving to our farm here
in Tasmania at the time. That process extended beyond the intended time
frame when I had to defer retirement until February 2005, since when I have
been busy building the hangar and workshop so construction can commence.
Hopefully all that will be done early in the new year.

My location is Powranna, Tasmania, Australia ( 41deg 40.239'S, 147deg
15.589'E). I know of 4 Rebels flying in Oz but none other either flying or
under construction in Tasmania. I would love to find another Tasmanian among
the list members. The Australian MAM representative is another Tasmanian but
operates from a base in far-off Queensland.

Meanwhile, there is a mountain of information to digest in the list
archives, so that is where I will be spending time over the coming holiday
period.

I have only just discovered the existence of the group - largely because it
never occured to me to look but thinking about that now, it should have been
an immediate thought, given the existence of similar groups on just about
every other topic known to mankind!

Cheers and seasons greetings.

G'day Bill !

Welcome to the group !! :-)

You're going to love your Rebel ! By all means, dig through
the archives - keep an eye out for "The Ontario Mods", and all the
info on landing gear.... (Hope you have the bungee gear !)
There's lots of pictures in the Files area, too ....

You'll find lots of useful advice here - just post a question,
and we'll all try to help. There are several builders here just
getting started, as well, so you'll have company on the journey
"Toward the Flightline" !

Your comments on the gear sound ominous though - I went for the spring gear.

Probably a good idea ..... ;-) Since you haven't started yet,
you could join the other folks who have the spring gear package
for sale here - check the archives, and skip the grief. ;-) :-)

Thanks for the warm welcome Bob.

Your comments on the gear sound ominous though - I went for the spring
gear.
Sounds like I should have started reading already?

G'day Bill !

Welcome to the group !! :-)

You're going to love your Rebel ! By all means, dig through
the archives - keep an eye out for "The Ontario Mods", and all the
info on landing gear.... (Hope you have the bungee gear !)
There's lots of pictures in the Files area, too ....

You'll find lots of useful advice here - just post a question,
and we'll all try to help. There are several builders here just
getting started, as well, so you'll have company on the journey
"Toward the Flightline" !

Thought I should briefly introduce myself.

I own a Rebel kit that arrived in April 2004. Believe it or not I have
yet
to unpack it, as I was in the throes of retiring and moving to our farm
here
in Tasmania at the time. That process extended beyond the intended
time
frame when I had to defer retirement until February 2005, since when I
have
been busy building the hangar and workshop so construction can
commence.
Hopefully all that will be done early in the new year.

My location is Powranna, Tasmania, Australia ( 41deg 40.239'S, 147deg

flying
or
under construction in Tasmania. I would love to find another Tasmanian
among
the list members. The Australian MAM representative is another
Tasmanian
but
operates from a base in far-off Queensland.

Meanwhile, there is a mountain of information to digest in the list
archives, so that is where I will be spending time over the coming
holiday
period.

I have only just discovered the existence of the group - largely
because
it
never occured to me to look but thinking about that now, it should have
been
an immediate thought, given the existence of similar groups on just
about
every other topic known to mankind!

Cheers and seasons greetings.

Bill,
Welcome to the group. This is a remarkable source but be forewarned that there is a diversity of opinion on every subject (tact intentional). Of course, that is also one of the main advantages. :):)

Enjoy the building process and retirement.

Hi Bill

Welcome onboard

There's so much useful stuff discussed here, and the file area of the site
has a wealth of information.

Enjoy your build - it's a great kit.

They're there, under E-modifications. There are even instructions!
