Another VERY important part of all of these chemistry 'systems' is
a good layer of ultraviolet protection !! This usually consists of a
few coats of silver 'paint', or some specially formulated finish that
blocks sunlight from the fabric. Without this protection, the fabric
will disintegrate - crumble to powder - after some time in the sun !!
With it, it can last for the life of the aircraft (or until a new paint
job is desired :-) ).

Sounds like you will have to scrape or cut out a piece of fabric to
see IF it has this protection .... Probably better to recover now, with
the right chemistry combination, if necessary, than to have problems
later !

Ceconite is a trade name for one brand of polyester fabric, but it also

recommended installation procedure for this brand, no different than you

Ok Wayne,
You have me so concerned, and rightfully so that I placed a call to
the
builder of flaperons on 145R.
I no nothing about fabric so tell me what you think.

He said he used the "Ceconite" not sure of spelling? Dacron system,
with
certified aircraft glue and a flexible primer which he said could be
painted
with any urethane paint ??

I also have a local Jodel builder coming to inspect them and if needed
he
will help to redo properly..

Thanks for the advice..
I will take what ever action is needed to have a safe aircraft.

Frank

Wayne & Bob
I think you have spent enough of your own time educating me, and I sure
don't want to see anyone get divorced (although you would have more time for
flying!! <big grin>) So I think to be safe, I will order the system you
recommended and have my local Jodel buddy take me through the steps (he's
quite a perfectionist which is good). And Wayne, don't worry, I just asked
him for my own records, I was honest and told him I knew nothing about
fabric and I wanted to know what system was used.

See, you guy's may have saved a life and not even known it!!

Also the "turning in the threads" issue with the controls at full extremes
and the drain holes forward of the bulkheads in the fuselage are also items
that I was aware of, but was not sure how everyone handled them. More work
to do on 145R!!

Thanks a bunch guys, that's what makes this list so valuable.

Frank

I was just kidding Frank! If my wife has put up with my idiosyncrasies for
going on 18 years (plus all those years in highschool), allowed me to put in
a private runway, then build a "little" hanger and all before I built her a
house!(actually she did as much work building the house as I did, she shoots
a pretty mean transit!) I don't think she is any hurry to leave me! She has
also had a pilots license for the last 6 years!(kind of the "if you can't

skis I built for her!)

Rebel 0145R

Post by Frank Arndt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:40 pm

We are definitely going to have to meet.
My father is in the midst of selling his plane and he is looking for a
701, he loves the performance!. I am going down to Florida for a few weeks
and will visit with him there for a day or two. I may call upon you on a
personal note about some 701 questions on his behalf if you don't mind, (or
maybe your wife would be the one to ask). He is also one of these runway in
the backyard guys, which is lucky for me as there is a hanger just waiting
for 145R. The EA81 powered Karatoo I mentioned in earlier emails is actually
his, and with the both of us and a full tank of fuel, his 800ft long strip
gets really short, I usually close my eye's and open them when we are at
500ft. The whole reason I started with 145R is so I could enjoy some short
hops around the patch with Dad. I got him interested in flying years ago and
left him hanging, so now it's time to have some fun again.

I am taking my notebook down to Florida with me so I won't loose touch.
I'm sure he will have some questions..

Frank

This "silver" paint Bob mentions for UV protection is the POLYSPRAY
portion
of the Polyfiber system. A very highly aluminum pigmented "paint". This
will
provide your UV protection for the fabric and can be left at this stage
if
you are leaving your aircraft in natural aluminum or your can paint to

complete
the "flexible" covering system. Howards on the other hand were painted

Hey Wayne, does your wife have a sister and if so do the traits run in
the family?

Wayne & Bob
I think you have spent enough of your own time educating me, and
I sure
don't want to see anyone get divorced (although you would have more
time
for
flying!! <big grin>) So I think to be safe, I will order the system
you
recommended and have my local Jodel buddy take me through the steps
(he's
quite a perfectionist which is good). And Wayne, don't worry, I
just asked
him for my own records, I was honest and told him I knew nothing
about
fabric and I wanted to know what system was used.

See, you guy's may have saved a life and not even known it!!

Also the "turning in the threads" issue with the controls at full
extremes
and the drain holes forward of the bulkheads in the fuselage are
also items
that I was aware of, but was not sure how everyone handled them.
More work
to do on 145R!!

Thanks a bunch guys, that's what makes this list so valuable.

Frank

This "silver" paint Bob mentions for UV protection is the
POLYSPRAY
portion
of the Polyfiber system. A very highly aluminum pigmented
"paint". This
will
provide your UV protection for the fabric and can be left at this
stage
if
you are leaving your aircraft in natural aluminum or your can
paint to
match
your paint scheme. Once again you should use the polyfiber paint
to
complete
the "flexible" covering system. Howards on the other hand were
painted
(by
Doug Ronan A/C) with the same "dupont"(can't think of the product
name
but
as used on aircraft by major a/c refurbishers) paint as the rest
of his
plane and have held up very well.(very flexible paint and does
not crack)
We
had some painted masking sheet and folded the sheet in half over
a month
later and it did not crack or peel. Much easier to get the
colours to
match
this way instead of using polyfiber paint on flaperons and then
something
else on the aluminum airframe.

Glad I said I won't have much time for this list, up to about 4
1/2
hours
per day now! I know aviation won't cause a divorce or anything
but this
computer stuff might!!!!

the other one is as useless as t--- on a bull! Leah says she could never
leave me, as it took too long to get me trained to this stage! She sure
isn't going to start a new training course for someone else, because she
doesn't think she will ever even get me programmed properly!!!!! "Better
the devil you know, than the devil you don't!!!!!" And she sure knows where
all our assets are!!!!(in the hanger) Sorry!!!!

Wayne

Never pursue another man's wife, but an available sister is another
