engine mounts

Post by Murray & Carol » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Hi from Calgary:

I am looking at an 0-320 with conical mount.
Is this a compromise to the dyna-focal or is it good sense due to a less
expensive conical mount and cheaper rubber bushings. Although I do
understand that a dyna-focal is suppose to be somewhat better.
For those who have a conical mount, did you make it from scratch or buy one
and modify it? Was this a major job or did it go quite smoothly?
I don't know if Murphy makes one.
All comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks

engine mounts

Murray,

Murphy will supply the mount in either dynafocal or conical mount
patterns/designs. Your choice!

The dynafocal engines shake like hell up front, compared to the older style
conical mounted engine, with some reduction in airframe vibration (but I
haven't detected any great difference and have flown both mount designs in
numerous Rebels). This extra engine movement, with the dynafocal mount, must
be taken into account to allow movement of the engine without cowl wear,
throttle/mixture linkage breakage etc. Howard's dynafocal O-320-E2D even had
it's carb bowl shaken loose (with all 4 screws still safetied!) giving a
good 1/16" gap between the bowl/gasket/throttle plate section. If you ever
have an engine that almost shuts down when the mixture is pulled and then
restarts numerous times just as the engine goes to do it's final "shake"
this may be the problem. It's the fuel being thrown from the bowl through
the gap in the gasket into the venturi and she starts up again!

Some, like Jack Weibe have made there own mounts, but did require a "nice
guy" like me to borrow the original Murphy mount from, to make their jig to
allow them to do so! I don't have a conical mount in stock anymore, so
that's out!

And your right the rubbers are peanuts for the conical, compared to about
$90 each set x 4 required for the dynafocal rubbers!

Regards,
Wayne G. O'Shea

I have an O320 on my Rebel with a conical mount that came from Murphy. I
received an initial one from them that didn't fit the fiberglass speed cowl
properly. The second one, which I am currently using raised the engine 1 1/2
inches. Be sure to order the right cowl for it too, so the carb inlet lines
up right.

The only O320 dynafocal mount Rebel I've been in had a metal 2 blade while
mine has a 3 blade Warp, and I really haven't noticed any difference. If
anything, I think mine is smoother. The dynafocals are supposed to have less
vibration, but I'm quite happy with mine.

engine mounts

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:22 pm

Walter brings up a good point here! The original MAM conical mount was
designed to go with the old style piper bowl and aluminum cowling door/frame
and the "speed" cowls prop position is an 1 1/2" higher up by design (or
mistake?!) than his. MAM has(had) both conical mounts available, so you will
need to specify which cowling you are going with to get the right one. Also
if going with the "speed" cowling the lower section needs to be order to
match the carb position. The dynafocal O-320-E2D is in the middle of the
sump and offset to the right (pilot view) vs say the O-320-B2A that has the
carb mounted at the rear of the oil sump and centered. I think these are the
only 2 choices if going with the speed cowling so you need to know which
engine you are using before you order it.

Post by Jones, Michael » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:27 am

hi all

so what engine mounts do you use for a conical mount, according to Murphy
parts list the conical use part number j-6230-1 which is for an 0-320
bellanca according to the spruce parts listed, this number also falls in the
section for dynafocal mounts ?? this does not seem to make sense ?

what about the spruce homebuilders lycoming conical engine mounts part
number 08-00662, anyone know if these will work ??

perhaps some one with conical mount can describe what the mounts look like ?

No it doesn't make sense Mike and it's just a catalogue listing error that
has been there for ever!

There is no way you could use a J-6230-1 on a dynafocal mount. Dynafocal
rubbers attach to the mount itself with a bolt extending out of them and
into the engine case from there. Conical rubbers attach to the case with the
bolt coming out of them and into the mount. Both are different diameters and
shapes so no way one could be used for the other.

The J-6230 is the ideal conical lord mount with its solid steel inserts (but
as well all know VERY pricy!). Having the steel built in keeps them from
compressing too much like plain rubber conical mounts do, and if they can
compress too much the rear intake pipes of the O-235/320 will hit the MAM
motor mount x tubes adding a bit of vibration to the airframe. You could of
course space the plain rubbers ones out with a couple large washers and
longer attach bolts.

MAM supplies the J-6230-1's with a conical mount FWFkit, although aircraft
they built like FOKM (sorry Garry!) have plain rubber conical bushings
holding the engine in place.

As always Mike, the choice is yours.

If you measured the steel bushing in the expensive ones it doesn't seem to
me that it would be that hard to drill out the centre of the cheap ones and
add a bushing. Am I missing something?

Yes Drew you are....it's not just a steel bushing thru the center joining
the two halfs (similar to a dynafocal rubber design). The rubbers themselves
have steel imbedded in them and the actual tapered surface that goes against
the case is steel as well.
