I am new to this site and plan on ordering a Rebel kit in the near future. I
am not sure which gross weight version I should go with, the 1450 or 1650lb
version. My plans are to use a 100 hp Rotax 912s engine. I have read that
due to the lightness of the engine you probobly can't put much more than 100
lbs in the baggage area and still be within the CG range. I do plan to
install floats some time down the road. So could anyone help me in deciding
which one will give me the best performance and still work decent on
floats. Thanks, Heath

That's a good question, and I guess it depends somewhat on your
objectives with the plane. Where do you live, flatlands or
mountains? How much fuel burn can you afford? Are you willing to
pay more up front, for a higher value plane in the end?
If you are indeed planning floats, you might want the 1650
version so you can upgrade later if need be to a larger engine.
On the other hand, I do know that Steve Sloan of Washington (not
sure if he is back on the list yet) has a 125 hp Cont I0240 in
his and is on floats, and it is a great performer. He did it by
keeping everything very light, and extensive fairing for speed.
Does anyone know the exact weight cost of the 1650 version over
the 1450 one?
If I were building a new Rebel, I would go for the 1650 version
and install an 0360 Lycoming. The new clone engines cost under
20K US now, which is pretty darn attractive for an improved
Lycoming 4 cyl. A 912S is less, but they're not cheap either. And
I am sure my finished plane with the 0360 on amphibs will be
worth more than that difference (912S price vs 0360), so I would
be ahead on the resale.
But that's me, and I'm sure others will disagree.

Hi All,
Has anyone chose the option of solid rivets versus the Avex rivets? If
so, how come?
Thanks!

Hi Fred,
Use the search feature -- you'll see quite a bit covered on this
(search 'solid' in Subject). The short answer is very few have done this,
and generally limited to some of the wing stringers.
