Elite Aft Door Posts

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:17 am

I wasn't thrilled with the single ribbed aft door posts ... seems like a
natural hand hold for entry and exit, and I envisioned a hefty passenger
grabbing it ... and well its flimsy and not that strong. In that I was in
there anyway installing the aft door post float fitting, I made a 0.025
C-channel (similar to the straight section of a fuselage rib) that runs the
vertical length of the existing door post. The inboard flange is the width
of the existing rib and the other the width of a normal flange. Then I
riveted the small (normal) flange to the skin and the other (wide flange) to
the free side (inboard) flange of the existing door post ... boxing it up.
For me, the added weight penalty (minimal in my view) to added strength
trade off was a viable. It's now very strong, and actually makes for a
great piece of structure to "grab on too". There's a few pictures of it on
my repair log site www.aacnet.com/elite/latest.

Have any other builders boxed up their aft door posts?
