rear float brackets

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

Bob:

I agree it's perhaps a bit forward, but not as much as a foot. The airplane
is parked considerably nose up, which gives the illusion of the step being
'way forward. The Montana 2200s have the rear spreader one full bay ahead
of where they are on the Murphy 1800s. I think this is partly because Keith
had the Glasair in mind. Anyway, I have a rear raked strut, but I have a
bracing wire running forward to a fitting at the rear end of the door sill
to absorb the aft forces on a hard touchdown. I'll post a pic for anybody
interested. On the Elite, the door sill is really solid (0.062), so I think
it will hold up. Guess we'll see.

Eric was pretty happy with his Rebel, but I do think the aft force on that
rear attach point could be a problem, and on the Rebel it's not so easy to
fix.

Hi Al !

From the photo, that looks like Ron Barber's old Rebel.
The step appears to be over a foot or more too far forward -
that would account for the angle of the rear support ....
and also the poor performance !! ;-) :-)

Guess they had <some> reason for the positioning.

Probably BILMAR floats Al, not CLAMAR's. I know of at least one Rebel
down
your way with a set of Bilmars on it that doesn't fly right. CLAMAR's
are
similar but significantly lighter, but IMHO still too heavy for the
Rebel
or
Elite or I'd be installing them myself.... considering I work hand in
hand
with Clair Sceli already. Pretty sure the deck pickup points are
pretty
similar on both mfg's floats though so the mounting strut picture
would
show
the "tale" without me needing to get measurements for Gilles.

rear float brackets

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

I think I'm pretty close on my 9" Al. Keith Kinden (Montana) moved the
spreader bar forward a bulkhead (and thus the attach bracket) because it's
too far back on the Murphy floats and it submerges on take off if you are
too quick to pull the stick right back.

rear float brackets

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

Gilles:

See pic on Elite float installations.

Unless Keith has some really brilliant ideas, it would be major surgery to
put a rear attach point on my airplane, now that everything's riveted up.
The pic shows a solution that is easy to retro fit. Be interested to know
what you think.

Gilles:

I think I have a picture of a Rebel on Clamar floats. The rear strut is
raked well forward, just like on the Montana 2200s, but nothing was done
about it, which I don't think is very good. If your fuselage is not
finished, then it would be a much better job to have the rear attach
point
at the rear of the door sill as Bob is doing (on the Elite at least). If
you have finished the fuselage with the standard MAM attach points, I
have
an alternate approach to relieve the fore-aft stress from the attach
point,
which we can discuss.

Just uploaded a scaned (not the best) picture to the "E - Float

2200 amphibs with the aft fittings moved up one station.

Gilles,
I uploaded three pics in the E-Float Installations that show the aft float
fitting and doublers installed. Note that the installation isn't complete
... still need to box the door post ... and then do same to other side. We
have the fitting and doublers programed up and can crank them out on the

rear float brackets

Post by C Brockway » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

Bob, I am interested in the fittings and doublers
also. I have some questions though for everyone. I
have no idea if I will go with MAM floats or
another type. Is the door post location only for
non-MAM floats or can the fitting location be used
with the MAM floats as well. The door post fitting
location seems to make more sense for a number of
reasons. I need to make a decision soon as I am
very close to installing the float fittings.

Unless Keith has some really brilliant ideas, it would be major surgery to
put a rear attach point on my airplane, now that everything's riveted up.
The pic shows a solution that is easy to retro fit. Be interested to know

rear float brackets

Post by Alan Hepburn » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

BTW, if you do go with the Murphy floats, and you have an Elite (not sure
about Rebel), make sure there is no forward bend on that attach bulkhead
(not even a fraction of an inch), and position the attach plates as close to
the outboard edge of the bulkhead as you can. Otherwise, the attach bolt
can interfere with th corner wrap skin.

Bob, I am interested in the fittings and doublers
also. I have some questions though for everyone. I
have no idea if I will go with MAM floats or
another type. Is the door post location only for
non-MAM floats or can the fitting location be used
with the MAM floats as well. The door post fitting
location seems to make more sense for a number of
reasons. I need to make a decision soon as I am
very close to installing the float fittings.

rear float brackets

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

612E will be flying around with both sets of aft fittings ... saw no good
reason to remove the MAM fittings that were already installed. Who knows,
the extra set may well come in handy ... for attaching a stringer of fish
... a trolling motor ... securing a [small] canoe ... a fishing chair ... or
hanging stuff in the water to keep cold ... hmmm ....

I found a picture on the Internet of the Green and White Elite on a set of
MAM 1800 amphibs (at least, from looking at the front gear, I think they're
MAM 1800's ...anyone confirm?) ... and did some pixel swapping to move the
struts to the door post. The angle of the picture isn't the greatest for
showing the aft strut rake angle ... www.aacnet.com/elite/1800aft.jpg and

rear float brackets

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

Hi Mike ... I thought so too at first, but then I saw what looked like
[lightening like] holes in the nose gear forks which looked the same as the
1800's ... and I couldn't tell if the nose gear legs were flat or round.
Also the MFC 2200A's I had seen before had black spackled paint aft of the
green paint, and these don't ... but it could have been an early picture as
you mentioned. Indeed you may be right on here ... they may be MFC 2200's.
I just learned that Keith made two special sets of 2200A's targeted for the
Elite/Rebel that had the aft spreader bar at the same station as the MAM
1800's (aft of the normal MFC 2200A's) ... so that throws a slight curve in
my picture based analysis as I can't be sure which model MFC 2200 is on the
G/W Elite. Did have fun moving the pixels though ... and putting them both
in a power point slide show and with a camera click sound transitioning
between the two pictures made for some pretty cool dynamic aft struts.

rear float brackets

Agree - they're not Montanas. The nose gears are different, the rear
spreader is too far back (though that could be one of these two sets), you
can see the tops of those circular plastic access hatches, and it's not
Keith's rigging.

Found this Elite 1800 Amphib MAM installation on the NW Rebel site ... nice
paint job. Those aft struts look pretty vertical ... and long.

http://groups.msn.com/NWRebelExperiment ... intallatio
n.msnw

Think the bottom line on all this is ... if you have an aft spreader bar
location like the MAM 1800's (or the two special 2200's that MFC built) then
the MAM aft fitting is the one to use. If you have regular MFC 2200's
(which has the aft spreader bar more forward then the 1800's) ... then the
MAM aft fitting can be used too ... or to get the strut more vertical,
attaching one station forward to the aft door post location is the way to
go. From what I've picked up thus far, the advantage to the more forward
aft spreader bar MFC 2200's is that the spreader bar won't make contact with
the water during take offs. However, I haven't flown either off the water,
so I can't speak from experience ... only what I've picked up. If there are
any out there reading this, would like to hear from Elite (or Rebel if
applicable) amphib drivers with experience taking off the water with the MAM
1800's set up ... specifically the aft spreader bar in the water issue (to
dispell or validate) ... thanks.

Agree - they're not Montanas. The nose gears are different, the rear
spreader is too far back (though that could be one of these two sets), you
can see the tops of those circular plastic access hatches, and it's not
Keith's rigging.

Hi Mike ... I thought so too at first, but then I saw what looked like
[lightening like] holes in the nose gear forks which looked the same as
the
1800's ... and I couldn't tell if the nose gear legs were flat or round.
Also the MFC 2200A's I had seen before had black spackled paint aft of the
green paint, and these don't ... but it could have been an early picture
as
you mentioned. Indeed you may be right on here ... they may be MFC
2200's.
I just learned that Keith made two special sets of 2200A's targeted for
the
Elite/Rebel that had the aft spreader bar at the same station as the MAM
1800's (aft of the normal MFC 2200A's) ... so that throws a slight curve
in
my picture based analysis as I can't be sure which model MFC 2200 is on
the
G/W Elite. Did have fun moving the pixels though ... and putting them
both
in a power point slide show and with a camera click sound transitioning
between the two pictures made for some pretty cool dynamic aft struts.

rear float brackets

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

As I already posted it's true Bob..if you give it the boot and haul the
stick back immediately you put the MAM 1800 rear spreader under water. Also
when doing plow turns... as if you don't have the spreader sealed off to the
float skins you fill the compartment where the spreader stubs come out of
the floats to bolt the speader bar to.
