Tank Sealants

Post by Mike Betti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:13 am

Thanks for the link. How much do you apply with the caulk tube? Do you run a
thin bead, do you circle each rivet?
David, did you make that landing light setup from scratch or buy something
to start with?

The caulking tube really is the hot tip, check my web site for the link to
the
supplier, look under wings.

I've never heard of a nitrogen purge for an end user and I dug up a
lot
of info on proseal.
Seal it and put it in the deep freeze if you have one and it is good
for
a long time. Warm it before opening so it doesn't condense moisture.
Yes the B2 grade is what MAM ships.
I used a triple beam balance which is good for 0.1 gm to measure mine.
A
lot of the affordable electronic scales don't really have the the
accuracy/resolution for small batches. I think some folks have rigged
up
a simple homemade 10:1 balance beam.

Tank Sealants

Post by David Ricker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:13 am

Hi Mike

You are welcome for the link, the idea of the web site is to pass on anything we
learn and to provoke discussion that will help us or others along the way.

The caulking gun trick is great for running a bead along each of the mating
surfaces before putting parts together and not as messy as the putty knife
method. We mix up about two small yougurt cups at a time and that is certainly
enough. We were probably more generous than recommended but in the big picture
for first timers we chose more than less thinking a bit of excess might make up
for lack of experience.

With respect to the seams, after the parts are assembled & riveted we ran a bead
around the perimeter (if req'd) and for sure a hershey kiss (well, smaller) over
every rivet on the inside to make sure there were no leak paths there.

The landing light is a kit MAM re-sells, about $100 and I don't recall if that
is $US or CDN. We got one for each wing.

Sounds like you are making good progress!

Cheers,

Dave

Tank Sealants

Post by Jean Poirier » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:13 am

Hello Mike

With the tube I put a filet +/- in the center of the rib, than level it wit
a popsicle stick. For corner, I put a filet and after I use my finger to
"squeeze" it in place, so fun!

Tank Sealants

Post by mbetti » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:13 am

I plan on going full force on the wings in about a week. Still finishing up the control surfaces. I was waiting for some back orders so now I can finish details on that stuff. I was looking for ideas on build times, I'm hoping to get wings finished before summer comes here in the UP, then the outside projects start around the house for a while. Back to the subject.
Pardon me for not reading ahead, are the fuel tanks pretty much sealed up at once or is it a piece here and a piece there through the process? So does it end up that a person can look into the tank before the top skin is applied and do a little extra sealing on everything prior to top skinning?

Tank Sealants

This website has an interesting article regarding tank sealants (think Pro
Seal, etc), It should answer some of the questions that were recently asked
by a Rebel Builder. Serves as a good reference also.
