Rigging the Flaps

Post by JACK JOOS » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:06 am

Greetings,

I am at the point where I should consider rigging up the flaps on the Moose.
However, I really don't care for the MAM method of having the flap cable go
vertical through prime real estate in the tail cone and then out through a
slit in the cabin top skin.
Has anyone out there got a better rigging method,(other than useing an
overhead flap handle and/or electric flap actuators), ie still keeping the
flap handle on the floor?
Would appreciate any suggestions or comments.
Thanks,
Jack Joos

Rigging the Flaps

Post by jtpackard » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:06 am

Jack:
I have the same opinion. I know other(s) have replaced the cable routing
per the MAM method with a Teleflex cable running from the handle over to a
rear door post-then up to the end of the large torque tube. On mine, I will
be adding a horn to the end of this torque tube to replace the one in the
middle sticking thru the top skin. The horn length will have to be the right
length to equal the oringinal 'arm' length. The Teleflex cable cost about
$20. I bought two because I screwed up figuring out how long it should be.
If you choose this method and your routing can accomodate an extra foot,
I'll sell the extra one for $10. I think it's 8 ft. Will measure exactly
if you or anyone else is interested.

Rigging the Flaps

Post by JACK JOOS » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:06 am

Tom,
Thanks for the response. Tom,7+ years, by this time you should be an expert
in deciphering the MAM manual.
Sounds like a good arrangement if the geometry comes out alright. Is there
any space conflict with both teleflex cable and fuel line running in the
same door post? Where do you get the teleflex cable from? The more I think
about it the better I like it. Just trying to assess what's the downside.
Thanks,

MECHANICAL: $26.35 $26.35

Totals Sub Total : $26.35

Rick:
Unfortunately, I haven't installed my cable yet and therefore don't have any
photos. However, Al Paxhia has used Teleflex cable for flaps in his Moose
and supplied me with photos. I lost those photos when my hard drive crashed
last year, but I'm sure he could supply. His email was paxhia2@comcast.net.

Tom,
I think the pictures that you had are the same ones in the archives under
S/M Flaps. If not I'll dig around and try to find something.

Rigging the Flaps

Post by JACK JOOS » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:09 am

Tom,
I've been away for the week. Thanks for the teleflex information. A 7' cable
must mean a pretty direct run. Is the large required bend radius(6"min?) an
issue in this routing? I see Al Paxhia may have posted some pictures in the
archives.
Thanks again,
Jack SR193

Rigging the Flaps

Post by jtpackard » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:09 am

Jack:
I checked and Al's photos of his flap installation were lost when the system
crashed last year. Might want to ask him to supply or post again on the
site. Yes, the cable routing is fairly direct and the radius isn't a
problem except for several inches of steel rod at the end of the cable. In
the door post, I had to grind away some of the sill that is inside the
channel so that the rod end could make the turn upward.
