Super Rebel landing gear

Post by David Qualley » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:39 pm

I have a quick question on the direction to mount the spring gear.. Bow
up, or Bow down?

The manual for the trike version isn't too clear.. For the taildragger
it shows bow up..

I am building the trike version. I've taken two pictures to show the
configurations:

The bow up picture seems to make the most sense to me, but the angle of
the axle seems to be quite large. I know once there is 3000lbs on the
gear that it will straighten out some, but just how much?

I've already confirmed with MAM that I have the right axel angle bracket
for the trike setup..

Dave

David,

Definitely bow up with lots of axle angle! You will need it ALL once the
weight of the completed aircraft is down on the wheels with those aluminum
gear legs. Even steel 180, 182, 185 and 206 Cessna legs are incredibly
arched in, when the weight is off the wheels.

***Grant McDaniel***, if I'm wrong let us know now! If people are giving
wrong information and you are taking the time to monitor a site that is not
funded by (to my knowledge) or the property of Murphy A/C, you should at
least insert the correct answers when asked. It would stop a lot of the
abusive language and bad mouthing that the factory is receiving from irate
builders that don't think they are getting a fair deal or answers to their
problems. (although I have run my own Corporations for long enough, that I
know you will never satisfy all of them). As everyone now knows you monitor
this site, why not take the time to answer some of the simpler questions
that pertain strictly to building the kit per the manual (thus no liability
problems by talking about mods) or simply make a standard statement for the
builder to request the same info on the Murphy Site Support page and then
they can't say you didn't try to help them. Just a thought, what do you (or
Darryl) think????

Also, your recent statements make the assumption that everyone building a
Murphy Product is on line. There are only 143 current subscribers to this
list, and how many kits have been sold??????? Even myself that has
personally purchased 3 complete kits from the factory and enough parts to
build a couple more, did not receive the float fix bulletin (along with
others) as I believe this bulletin was only sent out to people that bought
Murphy floats! There are many other brands of floats (Full Lotus, Aerocomp,
Edo etc.) going on Rebels and the "float fix" or similar structural work
should be done to all Rebels flying (even on wheels) with an engine bigger
than a R912. Don't forget I was able to shear all the rivets out of my
passenger door post and bust my windshield in Jan 1996, top to bottom
without damaging the gear (thus less than a 2g arrival, but on one ski) and
started the double row of rivets up the main door post, that most builders
have followed me to use. (even though this reported damage and subsequent
repair was ignored by the factory, until similar things happened in front of
the World at Oshkosh to the factory Elite and Les M.'s Rebel.) Don't know
if this double rivet row is a factory manual item yet, but it should be! You
must remember there are a lot of people still building older kits #'s, still
in the first 100 serial numbers etc. that have not received updates of
newer, stronger part availability etc. I have also, never seen a builders
notice to put nylon washers at each end of the elevator/rudder spars, to
keep the rivets from wearing through the attach hinges and I'm the guy that
sold the factory the nylon washers specifically for this purpose. ( I also
own a plastic injection moulding company - Genesis Plastics - 819383 Ontario
Ltd.)

Grant, don't take any of this personally as I am not trying to pick on you
or the factory, but just trying to offer ways to appease some of the
builders that need the factories assistance more than others! If you can
find a way to keep even some of them happy, it might make your life a little
easier and help word of mouth sales for Murphy (ie: your pay check). We also
all know that there are a few builders that would bitch and bitch even if
you came and built their kit for them and for those few, you can't help
them!!!!

Best Regards,
