Good Morning All,
Looking for opinions. I am concidering builing a small access door in to
the side skins of my Rebel between bulkheads C & D. I am thinking that this
will give me easier access to my battery and ELT.
Has anyone done this? Am I weekening the structure to much?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Why add weight and complexity unnecessarily? For as often as you
will need to service these items, it is easy enough just to crawl
into the back. Those are not tight quarters in a Rebel. If I was
building again, I would be looking at removing every bit of
weight possible, not adding.

Brad:
I would keep it as simple as possible access to the tail inside the
Rebel is quite easy. Keep your weight as low as possible. Realize also
the skins are structural so if you decide to go ahead I would suggest
that you run your thoughts by Murphy.

Access Door
Keep going Brad and get her in the air. As the others said it's so easy to
crawl down the tailcone that there really isn't a need for a door (put a hat
on though as I think that's where my hair and part of my scalp disappeared
to over the last 10+ years!). If CASARA or the Military find you after a
wreck they will probably axe a hole where you mark the fusleage "ELT located
here"...vs opening the access door anyhow. :o(

Access Door
I have a small access door back there on my Super Rebel. I added it because
I also extended my baggage area in that bay. I ran my cables low and built
a second floor just like the main cockpit and baggage area. I don't mind
the extra weight because I'm going to need some back there to compensate for
my slightly heavy Chevy V8.
There is one good reason to have an access door where the battery is
mounted. Makes jump starting a breeze. Of course you can always add a
Cessna or Piper plug in the fuselage side for that. Better yet, keep the
electrical system maintained and remember to turn off the master switch so
you won't need a jump start.
