off topic: AWOS

Does anyone know how one might go about trying to encourage the powers
that be (whoever they are) to set up an AWOS at an airport in Canada?
I've looked through the NavCanada stuff without finding any clue? Since
many of us fly from uncontrolled airports I thought this might be a good
place to ask such a question.

Couldn't find your answer there quickly but they are the powers to be.
We fought losing our manned station at YHB in the early 80s but lost out
and were one of the first AWOS stations.
Actually it's worked quite well over the years even though my friends
Dad was lost his job as head of meteorologist to a computer system.

We had a heavy rain today, first precip in a year ;-), almost like
snow..............

Do you really want one? If you are there then you can see what the
weather is.
If you are trying to get home then you should be able to make a pretty
accurate forecast based on your local knowledge and the area maps and
forecast. I don't believe an automated report unless it is consistant
with those area maps and forecasts anyway. Even if the AWOS is working
correctly, it could be argued that it mostly just limits your options
for a field that you are based at.

Granted it might help keep someone who doesn't know the area from flying
into poor weather but I doubt that it helps the local fellows...

My particular problem is that I live 45 minutes (70 km) by road from my
hanger and the wx at the airport is very different from elsewhere in the
vicinity. Typical of the foothills region. Thus it is not uncommon to
drive all the way to the plane only to decide that conditions at the
home airport are bad enough to deter activity - especially recreational
stuff with family or friends along. Extra information is never much of a
burden. : ) I'm still trying to wade thru Warren's suggestion - lots of
bumpfh but little to get one's foot against. So far, no one is
responsible as far as I can tell.
