Rebel trim tab throw

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

I got my trim servo installed with nutplates and the pushrod all fitted. I
only drilled one hole in the horn, right at the end. As currently adjusted,
anticipating a need for more nose up trim than nose down, I have about 1" of
trim tab down throw at the trailing edge, and about 5/8" up. Will this be
enough, or do I need to drill another hole further down the horn? Problem is
that I had to "scallop" out the edge of the horn quite a bit for clevis
clearance so if I make another hole it will have to be quite far down.
Thanks
Jesse

Hi Jesse !

Shouldn't be much of a problem - one hardly ever uses the trim
on a Rebel ! Just set it once - very near neutral, and leave it !!!

Rebels are NOT like Cessnas - or ANYTHING else - MUCH nicer !! :-)

I agree it'll probably be fine but I always trim full nose up for landing.
Trim also changes with speed and baggage on my plane

Hi Drew !

That is VERY unusual !! Perhaps you have a very forward C of G ??

The control forces are so light in the Rebel that I never change the trim
setting - just not necessary ..... One big disadvantage of full nose up
trim on landing is - you lose a large chunk of elevator area and authority !
This can make it hard to get a good flare & touchdown.

Jesse - you mention "trim horn" - I <HOPE> you are referring to the
doubled (back to back) horn legs, as per the factory Bulletin ! If you
don't have the 2 trim horns, you definitely SHOULD do that !!!

Rebel trim tab throw

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

I have been trimming mine full nose up to land, when the power is pulled
back, ever since I threw the O-320 on the nose and didn't move my battery
back (G25 on the firewall sideways..so center is about 5 inches forward of
firewall). I always like to be able to let go of the stick if the need
be..without going into a dive. Now that I have installed my hydraulic
system, have my skis on and moved my battery way back down the "megaphone"
less trim needed...but I still use a fair bit.

Rebel trim tab throw

I don't know about the Rebel, but, when I put a lot of baggage (re
camping equipment and food) plus my wife and kids in my Moose, I have to
have nearly full forward trim.

I try to have 1/2 aft trim for landing. I want to be able to do a
go-around without having to use both (weak) arms on the stick trying to
keep it from going vertical <grin> with full power.

I am told by another Moose owner that if you go too slow, I think arountd
65mph on final that the tail wants to sink and there is nothing you can do
about it. He did the M14 radial prior to Mam so maybe the c of g is
different. Is yours a Mam conversion? Or is the horizontal stab too small.
He said it prevented him from doing stol landings. Any comments.

Rebel trim tab throw

Larry...tell him to try putting some power on. You can't land the 4415 wing
STOL without power...it just don't work. The airfoil will quit flying nose
high without power. Takes some getting use to it and until you are well
versed in full power bursts to get some forward momentum (to avoid a
vertical drop without forward motion) carry min 60MPH down final..round it
out and let it slow while you gentle pull the stick back to avoid
ballooning.

Cheers,
Wayne

I would drill all the adjustment wholes in the trim horn and adjust the trim
after you get flying and can test it, so you can land it with just the up
trim. It may save you life someday.

well I do have a forward CofG when light. All my best landings are when my
100lb labrador retriever is in the back to critique me ;) To be honest
I've never made many landings without trimming I'll have to do a little
experimenting instead of just going along with my old cessna habits.

Rebel trim tab throw

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

Yeah, I am surprised to hear that anyone ever uses their trim in
flight. Mine is set for slight up elevator, and I never touch it.
It flies forever hands off in level flight, and even a steep full
power climb barely requires a touch, and again I never notice any
stick pressures on landings either. That is sure a lot different
the old Cherokees that I used to fly where I had to trim every
time I touched the throttle, or the passenger leaned forward.

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

Thanks for the replys guys,
Bob, I do have the horn doubled, thanks for checking though.
I guess I will leave it how it is for now, and drill a lower hole for more
travel later on if necessary. I just thought that it's such a big tab that
you shouldn't need a lot of deflection.
You guys that trim full on landing, how much throw do you have at full
deflection?
Thanks
