I am working on my rudder now and just wondering how many people installed

moose rudder trim??

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Hi Brad !

I dunno, but, unless you're planning a lot of IFR, with an autopilot,
I wouldn't bother !! Never flew one with rudder trim, and didn't miss it !

"Keep it SIMPLE, finish it QUICK, and GO FLYING !!! " :-)

You can always add stuff later - but I'll bet you'll be having 'way too
much fun to want to !!! :-)

There's electric trim on mine. I use it a fair amount on cross-country
flights; not sure it is worth it if a high % of your flying is local.
I'll post pictures next time I'm out at the airport.

I installed electric rudder trim. In over 400 hours I can not remember the
last time I touched the rudder trim. I would not recommend going to the
trouble of installing.

moose rudder trim??

Post by Reed Britt Civ OO-ALC/MAD » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Brad - I added the rudder trim - Talked to the guys at Ray Allen (Servo Mfg)
and they suggested a 6" trim about 2" (they were laughing about the size of
the elev trim)- worked out to half a bay and two or three rivets in - Scott
Aldrich pointed out that you should put it up in the clean air away from the
fuse turbulence which also keeps the rudder from interfering with the elev
in a full deflection situation. I put an extra rib (halfway made it 6") in
the bay under the mid hinge and put it in the upper half of that bay.

Is it needed? Your guess is as good as mine - I also put in an aileron trim
tab - Go figure..

Scott Aldrich

moose rudder trim??

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Brad both of the flight reviews published about the M14 powered Moose
commented on the need for rudder trim. That was with the V-530 propeller.

It appears a fixed ground adjustable tab is adequate though.

As Britt mentioned, my first rudder trim I just copied the elevator trim as
far as chord goes, I thought this would be easiest at the time. It was bad
idea due to elevator hitting the trim tab with full rudder deflection. I
remade the trim tab with a 2 inch chord; this keeps it behind the reach of
the elevator. I used an identical servo as the elevator.

Another builder made a spring and cable tension system up in the cockpit
floor that repositions the centering of the rudder pedals.

Scott
PS. Steve will tell you I need a yaw damper, not rudder trim - don't listen
to him.

Another thought on the rudder trim: As Steve pointed out yesterday, if you
are ever going to put an external load on (i.e. see picture of Robin with
the canoe in every Moose advertisement) your foot is going to get real
tired. I would rather have it and not use it than not have it and wish I
did (sort of like fuel or left over landing distance).

So I think I will install the trim setup. I should just need three extra
rudder ribs right? One full length to split a bay and two that can be cut off
like the elevator ribs are. Then two pieces of channel for each side and a
hinge. So if I make it half a bay and 2" deep that is enough? I think that was
one of the dimensions someone replied with but I want to double check. Thanks
for all the responses.

Brad - Are you planning on flying in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern
Hemisphere?

Actually a good question - I didn't even think about it - I too am going to
run a v8 - I think the different PSRU's might spin different directions but
I haven't worried about it yet - I did think about a gap seal on the super
large elevator trim -
