Skis on a Rebel
Skis on a Rebel
Hi guys:
Just looking for some ideas about ski flying on a Rebel (0-320).
I have my Rebel on penetration skis. I was out yesterday doing some
touch and goes on a lake just out side of Yellowknife, temp -8

I have a solution Peter...but the best I can do is about $10,665cdn and
you'll have to make you own attach fittings, rigging and install your own
hydraulic system and hoses to the skis. Cylinders included in price!
Don't know why you're having such problems though. I flew mine on my fix pen
skis for 7 years. First 4 of them with only a 100HP O-235 and the only place
I ever got stuck was in front of my own fuel tank. Sure when the snow is
really wet it can seem like forever getting off the ground (worst I ever did
with the 100HP was 1200 feet though!) but in powder snow I actually get off
the ground quicker on the skis than I do on wheels in the summer now that I
have 150 HP in it (and have that extra 18 sq ft of "wing" strapped on the
tires).
How far are your tires sticking out of those skis?? If more than about an
inch to an inch and a half Yes they're going to be a pain...and even that
little bit would really make your first few summer wheel landings
interesting if you squeeze them up against a plate and reinflate the tire.
Going to make one big flat spot!....but is the thing to do if you really
have to. I know guys that carry a plate and a hand air pump. Deflate, hammer
the plate in and reinflate when you're stuck on a wet lake and want to get
all you ice fishing gear home in one trip.
Cheers,
Wayne

Drew brings up a good point..BOTTOMS. The one time I got stuck (in front of
my fuel pump) with my 100HP I got so pissed off I ordered a fresh O-320 x
150HP....as that would be the cure to stuck frosty bottom alum!
$100 worth of UHMW polyethylene was a much cheaper fix...but needing more
power was a great excuse for the wife!!

Hey Guys, I just saw my first set of lightweight fiberglass skis. They even
feature a set of steel fingers that deploy from the bottom of th ski when
you step on the brakes. This allows some breaking and more importantly slow
speed steering. Maybe it even allows a 180 deg turn in less than a 100 foot
radius! They came with a Scottish Bulldog from the Swedish air force. If
anyone is interested I will take photos. It is sure strange to imagine a
tricycle gear airplane on skis.

Geez Wayne, Leah is a great catch, if I told my wife I needed extra H.P.
in
Rebel to get off the ground, she'd have me permantly grounded, lol.
Aurele
P.S. Couldn't resist sticking my 2 cents in, don't get a chance to
participate on the list much.

I had a set of skis for a C150 that I shipped to Alaska and a set of Kehlers
for a C172 that I shipped way into Northern Sask.
Most guys call skis on a tricycle gear airplane "widow maker" skis......but
I've had good success with the fixed penetration skis I built for my
father-in-laws CH701 and the strap on skis I built for my wife's 701. Just
gotta make sure you keep the stick/yoke back more than you would on
conventional gear. Just pretend you taxing a float plane at all times during
ground ops!
I'd be interested in a picture of these as well George.

$100 worth of UHMW polyethylene was a much cheaper fix...but needing
more power was a great excuse for the wife!!

Some people say I'm semi-retired, truth is I'm working for Muskoka delive
ry
on a small run, about 5 to6 hours a day, five days a week. Not too bad, 9
to
5, no headaches and lots of flexability.
Havn't had C-FONL on skis for a couple of years, question of ltd flying
conditions in winter and using that period for larger maintenance project
s.
Last winter/spring, added Dave's tips and strobes and this winter taking
all
controls off and either rejuvinating or replacing fabric.
Hope to fly more next summer, as I have joined our local Search and Rescu
e
unit, primarely as a navigator but they authorized the use of my rebel f
or
nav training any actual searches.
I've following the group and I know you have/will be extremely busy with
your new cottage.
Oh and the lakes are actually unthawing this week.

Aurele...good to hear you're keeping active! Get her back together and get
flying before you get rusty!
And oh yah...new park warden at Fushimi and apparently he may be a little
more persuadable for a gathering on the park beach than the last guy...so
we'll have to keep that in mind for future gatherings!

Skis on a Rebel
Thanks for the replies guys.
There was ice frozen on the bottom of the skis before I left the
airport. I tried to remove this ice with a scraper.
The lake I was landing on had some spots of overflow, but not much.
The wheels are about 1" below the skis.
I have a warp drive prop set at 13

Peter, thanks for the question on the flaps. I have had the same
thoughts and was even wondering whether there was something wrong with
my flaps. Can anybody out there enlighten us on the 20 degrees that turn
into about 5 in the air ?
I would have asked Bob P this in person but he went off with some guy to
Alberta and left me all alone here in Brampton!!
