Battery Support
Battery Support
Gentlemen
I am about to finish the tail cone between bulkhead A and Fus 36 and
would like to make some reinforcements in the area between bulkeads D
and E, where in the future I intend to install the battery. I have a
Lyco O-320 and am not moving 3" back the firewall.
In principle, the idea is to extend corner wraps, U channels and
internal floor to bulkhead E, and then build the direct support to the
battery attached to those reinforcements. I have seen this configuration
in a Rebel photo given by a friend.
I would very much appreciate to have your views and comments on this
idea.
Thanks

Jose:
I put my battery in front of "E". Riveted an .063 doubler on the floor for
the battery box to sit on. Put PL400 adhesive under it so there is no way
it's comming off. This also added extra reinforcing for the hold down clamps
for the strap. I did move my firewall back 3".
Good luck

Thanks for the information. Two more questions, please:
1-Was the .063 the only reinforcement you have done? Have you extended
installation of U channels (ST-31) and wrap corners between bulkheads D and
E and then placed the .063 plate on top? Originally, Murphy instructions ask
for U channels and corner wraps to go only up to bulkhead D.
2- Have you moved back the pulleys one bay, behind the battery?
Thanks again

I think I need additional instructions on the reinforcement as my battery
HAS to be installed far in the back due to the CG position. As I mentioned I
have an O-320 and am not moving back the firewall...

Another consideration might be to mount your battery on the side
shelf as far back as possible. The Odyssey PC680 is only 3.11
inches wide (15 pounds) and it wouldn't take much to secure it
there. Also it does not need venting or a battery enclosure. That
would leave your rear floor area clear in case you ever have to
crawl back in there to do something. Also leaves room for other
stuff, like an ELT, tool kit or survival kit. You will want to
move as much weight as possible back there if you are not cutting
back the firewall.

When I built Rebel 652, I also did not move the firewall back and used a Lyc
O320. I placed my Odessy 35lb battery on the floor RH side between the 2nd
and 3rd bulkheads past the rear window. I added a .062 bottom plate with
3/4x3/4 alum. angle to box in the battery and also to attach .040 x 2"
straps which bolted together over the center of the battery. My ELT was
mounted behind the battery. This combination brought by C of G exactly where
it should be.

Gotta agree Drew,...should have flown on the starter! Sounds like a fork

Many thanks for the information.
My battery weighs about 25 Lbs and therefore I have to install it further
back, probably interfering with the elevator pulleys.
Anyone has experience in moving the referred pulleys one bulkead back or in
raising the battery support to avoid conflicting with elevator cables?

Subject: Re: Battery Support
Thanks Murray
I think I need additional instructions on the reinforcement as my
mentionedHAS to be installed far in the back due to the CG position. As I
batteryI
have an O-320 and am not moving back the firewall...
Any other Rebel builder has some experience on this?!

Jose:
My battery is in front of "D" not "E" so the pulley is behind the
toand I didn't put in any other reinforcing other than to rivet the .063
the existing floor with adhesive between the two.I have not changed the
pulley location.
Good luck
Murray

Battery Support
G'day Guys !
Just got back from a 2000 mile "quick holiday" in 541R .... went
GREAT !!!!!
Couple of really attention getting landings ..... Landed at Wilpena
Pound in Central / Southern Australia in a 20 gusting 30 knot dead
crosswind ... FULL right rudder & FULL left aileron - just to keep it
lined up on the runway .... the Rebel went GREAT ... (my underwear
didn't fare as well though ..... when we turned around we had to use
full rudder AND lots of dragging brake to taxi back down the strip !!!
The more we fly the Rebel , the happier I am we built one !
We attended the SAAA ( our version of the E. A. A.) fly in convention
at Temora over the weekend , and I think I've notched up a couple of
sales for Australian Rebels .....
back to the battery question :
We now have an IO-320, engine mount sticks our far enough to get the BIG
/ LONG Lycoming oil filter on the back of it, firewall NOT shortened,
700Ah Odyssey battery mounted ON the firewall (engine side), wooden
prop, lightweight B & C starter & lightweight alternator ("SD 28" -
driven off the vacuum pad at rear of engine), and a nice heavy Scott
3400 tailwheel ..... and 10kg of lead right down near the rudder post
to get the balance point we wanted
our Rebel is now registered at 925kg M. T. O. W. ... ( and is called a
Rebel PLUS) ..... and the only reason I would consider selling it ,
would be to build another Rebel with all the modifications I now I
realize I should have done , built into it from day one !
Wayne: you will probably be getting contacted by one of the guys I took
flying (Ian) .... he is absolutely wrapped in the Rebel and is planning
to come over to Canada to see you , Bob , Bart Lalonde and Murphy and
sort out all the bits he wants ...
Ian has owned many aircraft (and still does ) and is just completing his
RV 4, .... but now wants to build a Rebel (I think he's not hard up for
a dollar ) .... but he says he needs to sell his Baron and Piper Colt
1st - ( mainly I think, to get more room in his hangar ) - Life is
tough for some !

When I built Rebel 652, I also did not move the firewall back and used
a Lyc
O320. I placed my Odessy 35lb battery on the floor RH side between the
2nd
and 3rd bulkheads past the rear window. I added a .062 bottom plate
with
3/4x3/4 alum. angle to box in the battery and also to attach .040 x 2"
straps which bolted together over the center of the battery. My ELT
was
mounted behind the battery. This combination brought by C of G exactly
where
it should be.
