I just completed my annual on Rebel "652" in preparation for a new
owner. After reading on this list about some of you experiencing
problems with the tail wheel unit, I did a complete disassembly to
inspect the locking/unlocking mechanism. The unit still looks like new
after 200 + hours. Absolutely no wear on either the locking pin or slot.
When constructing the aircraft I did add a spiral groove around the
pivot shaft to ensure grease flows up and down the pivot shaft and all
parts where still well greased at disassembly. When greasing I make sure
grease flows out both the top and bottom areas. As Bob Patterson has
stated before - grease this area often. Mine has been done at least
every 25 hours with obviously very good results. Bob Johnson "Rebel 652"
(ps - there is nothing wrong with this design or operation if maintained
properly)
