Rebel elevator reinforcement

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:27 am

I will be getting a new rudder skin because mine was badly scratched in
shipping. Can I use the .016 material for the quarter moon doublers on the
elevator corners, or should it be .025?
Thanks.
Jesse

Jesse, it was the end rib on the elevator that you should reinforce. On an
original build I suggest a small piece of angle with a couple rivets into
the end ribs flat face and on the other side of the angle a single RV1613
into the spar tube. This will keep the rib from rotating on the single rivet
that holds it to the spar if built according to the manual. A couple of ,025
doublers in a quarter moon shape picking up 3 rivets in each direction don't
hurt either! The balancer tip's up and down motions twist this end rib until
it forms cracks/buckles or breaks off the attachment tab to the spar. Easier
to tackle now...than after paint and a couple years down the road when you
have forgot where your tools and cleco's went!

Cheers,
Wayne

If you add the little piece of angle for the extra "pegging" rivet on the
end rib probably can get away with using the .016. Not much in the way of
.025 in the kit to get material for a doubler from. Could get out of the
trimmings off a FUS-70 probably...but you're a long way from that part of
the fuselage.

Cheers,
Wayne

Thanks Wayne,
Wicks has .025 2' X 4' for about $10 plus shipping, so maybe I will buy a
piece. I assume there will be other uses for sheet stock. Is this a handy
thickness to have around?

Yes...very handy for anywhere you make a hole in the .016 or .020 skins for
access/booboo/etc and need a doubler ring!

Rebel elevator reinforcement

Hi Jesse
I find 0.032 better for brackets but 0.025 is a fine replacement for any
small 0.020 parts that you ummm need to remake ;) and such as Wayne says.
ie. since the stuff rolls up and shipping is probably the same you might
consider ordering more than one piece or perhaps a larger piece of
6061T6... Of course it could also just be that I am particularly gifted
at turning aluminum into scrap! Got 30 cents a lb. for scrap last time
but don't think I broke even...

Thanks Wayne and Ken,
Yes, I guess it makes sense to order a piece of both .025 and .032.

Craig Walls

Rebel Elevator Reinforcement

Post by Craig Walls » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:17 pm

Hi All! Happy New Year!!

I'm working on the elevators and I'm ready to add the extra reinforcement
pieces at the outboard end. There are 2 flat pieces that tuck up between
the rib and skin (no problem) and there's one that looks like a rib that
fits inside the rib.

My question is: is there a pattern floating around somewhere for that piece
that goes inside the rib or do I get my first lesson in fabbing curved
aluminum parts?

Update: I still haven't finished the fin. After two tries I was sick of
it. Luckily, I'm having success with the rudder and elevators! I do think
I know where I screwed it up, though. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to
just use some flat stock and put creases in it or pay MAM $144 ea for them.
Cheers, Craig
