Starters

Post by Jennifer Grant » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi All
We have a Toyota truck starter and a Nippondenso alternator from a Honda
car on the 0-290 on our Rebel. Also we have a Power-surge 12v garden tractor
battery way back in the tail and vented out the bottom of the fus. So far
it all works quite well and has been trouble free.
I recently completed a number of structural up-grades to the air frame and
have been very pleased with the results. The impetus for the work was a
deformed fus 40 when the 2bulkheads at the rear drag strut deformed where
they are notched. Anyway, while I had it that far apart to solid rivet
doublers on each side of the offending bulkheads I did a ton of other stuff
so I would'nt have to go in there again.Including making new .032 lower
rear corner wraps, fus 40,pie-shaped doublers under the rear of the
door,front lower corner wrap doublers,.040 door sill,and .032 witchs-hats
in 5 places on each side. By the time I finished I had consumed most of a
sheet of .032 .
Plus a bunch of things to enable the amphib/land-gear transition to go
smoother.
Best Regards, Angus
P.S. Sorry about your cowl Bob.My wife always says to me,"Take a deep
breath, its nothing that money can't fix".

Hi Bob !

The B&C lightweight starter is about the best, but the Skytec
is cheaper, and available in Orillia ..... both work fine, and are
a LOT lighter than the original anchor ! ;-)

WALTER KLATT

starters

Post by WALTER KLATT » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

Bob, I bought mine quite a few years ago, and without taking off my cowl and checking, can't remember the model number. However, I just checked the Sky-tec website, and it looks the same as the HT model there. I noted they have a new inline high torque starter for Lycoming that they claim is popular now. I'm not sure which one I would buy today, but would start by looking at some of these, and comparing weights, etc. There are probably others on this list who could make a more current and informed recommendation.

me $20

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

As far as I know they're all the same. I think mine came from a late 80s
camry. For the bracket I started with a peice of 3/8" angle 4"x6" by about
4" long it sits quite close to the flywheel so the teeth can mesh. I had to
countersink the attach bolts so they'd clear the flywheel. I also redrilled
them and tapped for regular NC bolts.
If you're looking for a skytec here's one on ebay

Hi All
The march 1991 issue of Sport Aviation has an excellent drawing
with instructions for a Toyota starter installation on the Lycoming
engines.I've been using this setup on my 0-320 for a year with
excellent results.I've also adapted a small Nippondenso alternator
[ I think Suzuki Swift] 55 amp, and it works great !
I saved 8 lbs with the starter and 5 lbs with the alternator.

good luck....................Jim

Ditto from me! I put the Skyteck 122 (or 149)-12PM on all my engines. This
is the one that has the solenoid to the right side so it is tucked between
the starter and the crankcase. If your cowling is REALLY tight then you will
need to go with one of the cantilever design Skytec's or their competitions.

I've posted here before...when the Skytec internals go it is nothing but a
Ford Permanant Magnet starter packed into a new casing. Any good electric
rebuilder can overhaul it for less than $75cdn
